174 The Wining nud Scientific Sress, ‘Beauriron Exrracr.—The following is from the Wisconsiu Hurmer: “Not to the mujority of men who we are satisfied think that soil is nothing but dirt, but to the chemist, who knows its origin, its nature, and its eapabilities, it is a wonderful mixturo of threo bea .tiful elements, which in their ever-varying forms become the ambient air, the liquid ocean, the precious opal, the amethyst, and the still more preeious diamond; or delieate blue bell and violet, the amarath, the lily, and the rose, the spear of blue grass and tbe eedar of Lebanon ; or again, the ruby lip, the love-lit eye, the noblo palpitatiug heart, and more wonderfu, brain. ‘Phese are the jewels of which the soil is composed, apd out of which the Husbandman strives to foree tho food hunger claims. Ueneeforth, as he turns the furrow of his field, let tbe sleep of his thought be broken by the reflection that tbe earth thus stirred up by his plonghshare is doubtless eomposed of his ancestral heroes, whose deeds are tho histery of tle past, and whose mortal remaing are the plastic inaterial ‘out of whieh are building the budies of men to day.” Sintoats or Muruvi, axp Siuntctan Metnyn. Friedal and Cratts huyo announced to the Paris Chemical Society that they have succeeded in forming silieate of methyl by the aetion of perfeetly pure and dry wood spirit op chloride of silicium. By heating together zine niethyl and ehloride of silicium they obtained siliciam methyl. MINING LAWS AND FORMS. Third Editlon rovised and onlarged. Compiled by WH. That is, the respective mullers boing of the sume diameter, samo weight, same hardness, and runuing at tho samo velocity “The Excelsior Grinder and Amalgamator” will reduce one hnus dred and scyonty-seveu tous of ore, the Flat Bottomed Pan ninctycight tons, and the Conical an ono hundred and ten tons to the same degree of fineness in the sumo tinie. The wear to the Shoes and Dies at their grinding surfaces in the Excelsior Grinder and Amalgnmator, is perfoctly nniform, thus
securing eyenucss of reduction to the pulp, as woll as steadiness of motion to the muller. Uniform wear of the grinding plies has been attained in no other than that of tho Tractory form—nor can it be, Another property of oxcellonce in this machine is that tho metal or substance to be amalgamated passes direct from tho grinding surfaces into the quicksilver; thus oxcluding the possihility of its becoming coated with any forcign substances, after huving been burnished, It is trathfully said “that the Tractory-formed Pun as a Grinder has no equal, and as an Amalgamator no superior.” As a whole, it is far superior to any other pan in use.
