Che Mining and Scientific Press. 187 Iszxeosive Gespowver.—A London letter of recent date says: * Beside the ntetlod rendering ganpowder inexplosive, invented by Mr. Gale. and which the governinent seems disposed to purcha-e, we Lave two new explosives. One iz a very strong gunpowder, which is made up of two purtions like a seidlitz powder, ench inexplosive by itself, to be mixed together before louding the rille. Jt has been tried at our nearest shooting-grounds, itis said with goud success. ‘Ihe other is a mixture for Dlasting, a liqaid composed of one purt of glycerine and three parts of nitric neid. “This is poured into a very sinall hole in n rock, and some wuter—the only lamping required —is ponred on top. A fuse. parsing throuxh the water, explodes the mixtnre with a foren so inuch greater than gunpowder ns to very much reduce the cost of such operations.” A Prescn statistician hag discovered the important fact that fewer women than men nre struck by lizhtoiny. Out of 800 sufferers from lightning in lrunce in ten years only 243 were women, and in Haglund the propor tion was still smaller. In many cases, the lightning falling in the midst of groups of persons of both sexes, struck ten, in prefertice to women, whoin it spared more or less. What can be the ecanse of this remarkable difference on thu part uf the electric fluid? Tug Baropeun physicians have experiinented until ut last they are able to curc tho Russian Plaguo. Out of 364 patients recently admitted in one hospital, only 97 died. Sroxea were first used for bullets ; iron ones are first mentioned in 1540. Leaden bullets were mnde before the close of the sixteenth eoutury. Stone cannon balls are still used ju the Kast. Iz is computed that there are 600 neres in cotton in this State, this year.
