Tue Cricxrt.—The Cricket is a curious
little insect. It has given rise to two proverdial expressions ; in France people say ; “ silly
aaa cricket.” while in England and Ainerica
we sy, “merry as a cricket. Crickets eat
133, geed3 unl fruits, conveying then to their
Sites and though they are very fond of drinking the dew on teaves and flowers, they are
very careful nut to wet themselves vn their
journeys in scarch of food. ‘The young live in
peace, bat when they grow up they manifest
‘a must belticose disposition, and are .continually flzhting with one auother. ‘The boys in
Germany are very fond of keeping crickets in
boxes fur thy sake of their song, ond for the
purpose of watching their battles. What thu

to thu Euylishman, the cricket is to the Ger.
twan youth. ‘heir centests are very sharp and
very amusiog. According to the way in which
they happen to mect, thuy batt like rains, kick
like horses, or scratch bike citts, and tle contest is unceasing in its ferocity, until one of
the insects fices from the field or is disabled.
It nist be remembered that the Wuropean
house cricket ia not kuown in our country. Its
syug is much more varied and much checricr
than that of the species which sometimes finds
its way into our huarths.

PATENT AMALGAMATOR.
These Machines Stund Unrivaled.
For rapldly pniverizing and amalgamating ores, they
have noecqual. Noeffort has becn,or will be, spared to
have them construcled in the most perfect munnet, and of
the great nuinber now Jn operstion, nut one has cver renired repairs, The constant and increasing demand tor
them Is sutticient cvidence of thelr merits. ;
They arc constructed so asto apply stcain directly Into
the pulp, or with stcam bottoms, as desired.
Thia Amalgamator Operates as Follows:
The pan belng filled, the motion of themnier forces the
pulp te the center, whero It Is drawn down throngh the Ans
ertire and between the griudlng surfaces. Thence It Is
thrown Petia eh Into the quicksilver. The enrved
plates again draw itto the center, where It ia down,
and tothe elreumforence as before. Thus It is coustantly
assing in a regular flow between tho grinding sarlaees and
ite the quicksilver, until the ore is reduccd to an impalpable powdor, and the metal amalgamated.
Setters made on tho same principle excel all others.—
They bring the pulp 80 constantly and pertcctly in contact
with quicksliver, that the particles are rapidly and completely absorbed.
Mil men are Invited to exam)ne these pans and sollers for
