Che Rlining and Scientific Lress. 235 Ssectixn Corprr Ores.—Messrs. Peter Spence und H. Davis of England, have made a disevvory in copper smelting which consists in using, asa tlux, the spent shale of the nlum wanafrcturo, bemy the residuin of the shale of the col imeasures ufter it has been reted upon by sulphuric acit forthe prudeetion of ulum. Vhe quantity of such spent shale necessary for each charge of ore will vary with the character of the ore, and, in practice, is easily uscertained by the workman , who will discover that, when a safficient quantity has been added, the flux or slag will pert casily froin the regulus or metal. and enable him to skim off aud raw out the slag, withoat the regulus or metul elingiag to it. In praeticoit is fonud that, by using spent shale for u flux, a slag more thun ordinarily free frou copper, or, as it is termed, a clean stay, ia obtained, which is a matter of great importanco in copper smelting,2s when the slag is not clean thero Is a great loss of copper in consequence. ‘Ihe patentees claim the use of speut shaloas a flux in copper smelting.
