» 238 Restorine THe Features or Drap BoDtss. The following process of restoring the features of a dead body that has undergone putrefaction is being applied with great success. ‘I'he body is placed in a water-tight shell; twenty pounds of common salt, and one pound of hiydrochloric acid are added to the water nnd the inimersion is sustained three hours. The body is then removed, the face is washed with siniple water and then with chlorine water, and finally a current of chloride gas is passed freely over the face. ‘he restoration of the features thug rendered is so perfect’ that the body can be positively identified. Peruars the largest fee that hns ever been given to any inan of a rank lower than thnt of royalty, was lately bestowed on M. Nellaton, the famous surgeon. He received a fee of £16,000 for going to Russia to wait on a patient. «Patent Paper Reel for Telegraph Register.”* San Francisco, Sept. 18, 1865. Eps. Mintne ann Soistiric Pritss—Sirs:—Havilg noticed the above heading in your vatuable paper of the Ml inst., T beg leave to inforin you that the inveution is not Mr. L. W. Wortl's, but oe already patented by we, while a resldent of Cleveland, Ohio. His torm of reel is one that I first got up In 1863, and filed a caveat for, aud afterwards improved by pattiug sume gearing, or elock machinery, so 1s not to use so much cord, The length of cord that I use now to runall day, would not run his reel one hour. Atter making my inprovemeut, I applicd for a patent, which was granted to me on the 19th of January, 1864. That patent covers all of his, so-called, improvement, as will be seeu by my iets (Noa. 41,312) which claim reads as follows: "What I claim for my improvemeut, is the arrangcment of the mutually exchangeable reels D and F, in combiuation with the gears, cord, pulleys, alul weight, the several parts belug coustructed, arranged, and operating as and for the purpose herein sct forth.” This patent was obtained for me by Messrs. Bralnard & Burridge, of Cleveland, Ohio, Putcnt Solieitors, And I further state, that all persons wishing to usc said Paper Reels, will pleaso to come and make arrangements with me for their use. As for any advantage hie has over other reels, lt cau only be that he has a greater length ot cord to to wlnd up. Those thatI built, of lis Styles betore Tlind mine patented and after I filed acavcat, hud all to be cxchanged for my new Reel. In putting this up it takes only six screws to do.thowhole business, and takes up so little room thatitlsqutte a convenient and usefil instrument. dress, McGANN, vil At the Union Works, First st.,San Francisco. Ghe Wining and Srientific Breas, a i i THE EXCELSIOR GRINDER AND AMALGAMATOR, In the engraving herewith presented, A represents the Rim of the Pan; B, Muller; C, Legs; D, Cross-Frame; 5, Gearing; F, Screw j; G, Lever; H, Dash-Boards; I, Key; a, Dies; c, Shoes, and o, Openings, The relative grinding capacities of “The Excelsior” Grinder and Amalgamator, of the Flat Bottomed Pan, and of the Conical Pan when properly constructed, are respectively 177, 98 and 110. That is, the respective mullers being of the same diameter, samo weight, saino hardness, and running at the same velocity “The Excelsior Grinder and Amalgamator” will reduce one hundred and seventy-seven tons of ore, the Flat Bottomed Pan ninetyeight tons, and the Conical Pan one hundred and ten tons to the same degree of fineness in the same time. The wear to the Shoes and Dies at their grinding surfaces in the Excelsior Grinder and Amalgamator, is perfectly uniform, thus
securing evenness of rednction to the pulp, as well as steadiness of motion to tho muller. Uniform wear of the grinding plates has been attained in no other than that of tbe Tractory form—nor ean it be. Another property of excellence in this machine is that the metal or substance to be amalgamated passes direct from the grinding surfaces into the quicksilver ; thus excluding the possibility of its becoining eoated with any foreign substances, aftcr having beon burnished. It is truthfully said “that tbe Tractory-formed Pan as a Grindcr has no equal, and as an Amalgamator no superior.” As a whole, it is far superior to any other pan in use. Those using this invention certify that they thoronghly reduce five tons of ore, as it ordinarily comes from the wet battery, per day in each pan, four feet diameter, the muller making sixty-five revolutions per minute. 2d.
