: J.C. AYER.
Lowell, Mass., Aug. 28, 1865.
Tho abovo letter fully explains itsclf, What
we said in the article relerred to, lu relutiou
to I’rofessor ‘T'orrey, wo stnted on the anthority of a matual friend, who assured us that ho
had it from the professor himself. Both gentlemen are now at the East, aad we give all
partivs conceraed the heacfit of Dr. Ayer’s
coninunication.
So furas the certificates of “Dra. Hnycs,
Silliman and Torrey” go, they refer merely to
8 laboratory process—the treatment of small
quantities of oro; aitd prove aothing with regard to the value of tho discovery asa mill
process. Dr. Ayer, however, assures us in
tho abovo communication, that “ further and
larger experiments more thon sustain all they
sny.” But tho further fnet whieh the Doctor
states ia his letter, that the company “have
ahle cngincers engaged upon the furnaces nnd
appliances required, with veasonable expectations of having them soon perfected,” would
sccm to imply that the process has not yet
renched a suecess. It appears, however, thut
experiments are still in progress; aad we sincerely hope that tho most saaguino expectations of the company will he more than realized. The Doctor rightly judges that we can
lave ao motive to misstate him, or place any
hindranee ia the way of experialeat or progress
ia this direction. We can assure him, aad all
other parties coaccraed, that we shall be especially happy to announce any satisfactory
result, coming from any soaree, which shall
tend to simplify or ebeapen any of the proeesses of mining. Our only object was to
placo miners oa their guard against what we
yet coasider extravagaat figuresaod ealcula
tions with regard to the supposed resulta of
this process. Don’t publish your figures, gentlemea, until they have been verified by praetical results. ‘The people of California have already suffercd qnite too mach by misplaced confideace in assumed results. Factsare what we
waat, aad not figures.

The Proprictors of the Minino ayn ScizNtirio Press wonld
call the espeelal attention of Miniso Secnetagies, TRostkK
and Suarkuo.nes, toa few substantial reasons for the pub.
Heatlon of Minlng Notices In their journal—the first and only
Important newspaper of its clasy published upon this coast,
Isi. The Press enjoys a large and permanent subseriplion
list, having a more unlyersal circulation among sharehoid
ers and men mtlmately connected with mining Interests
than any other publication.
2d. Under the present law the publication of all mining
notlees on Saturday, In a weekly journal, coinplles as tuily
with the statuics as a dally publication. It is generall
found to be equally as convenient for scerctaries, and decidedly preferable to stoekhulders who huve not tine to exainIne thronghaut every Issue of a dally.
. Keonomy Inmining should always be looked upon
with favor, and the cost for weekly advertising Inthe Press

elty posscashug a respectable clrculation.
4th. The publishers of the Press, making the mining Interest their especial care, take particular palns to assist in the
avoidance of errorsin advertising. Our plat is also more
elearand perfect Ihancan beexpceeted insuch papers as
are hurriedly issucd trom eylinder presscs.
Sth. Our “Sharecholders’ Directory” forms a complete Indox of all minlag notices ls faSan Francisco, by referenec to which sharcholdcrs ean at onec sce If their coiaany Is advertised, and dslermine whether tie same is Inserted In the Press or some other paper.
6th. Many coples of the Press arg bonnd by prominent
rofesslonal men, mechanics, scerclarics, brokers, shareolders and others, as an Imnportant record for future reference, thereby rendering advertising, of every class, in Ite
eolinnns, of peculiar and permanent yalue.
7th. The benefit of having all mining notlees consolidated
Inone newspaper, for the common convenience of shareholders, seeretarles, and others who haye cccaslon to refer
to the same, Isohvlous. With this view ws have established
our rates at only falr, Ilving prices, believing that a journal
like ours, untrammeled by party, treed, or prejudice, is
the only medium which caa reasonably ask for such n consolldaiion of mining patronage.
