Inreresting Fosst Remars.—The tusk of
a fossil elephant was found recently, near
Brattleboro, Vermont. It is forty-four incbes
long and eightcen inches circumference at the
larger end, and is in good preservation. ‘This
tusk belongs to a specics supposed to have been
extinct in the earlier periods. ‘I'he creature is
known to naturalists as the Hlephas Primogenius Blumenbach, formerly inhabiting the
northern part of this continent, having wandered across the Siberian plains to the Arctic
Ocean and Behring Straits, and thence south
to about the fortieth parallel. ‘Thc animal
was about twice the weight and one-third taller
than the modern-species. The remains of one
of these gigantic creatures were found on the
summit of Greeu Mouutain, at Mount Holly,
in 1818.
The foregoing is especially interesting here,
because remains of a similar character are in
possession of the Historical Society at Sonora,
Tuolumnecounty. ‘That region has been won.
derfully productive of fossii remains, though
most of the tusks and bones discovered there
have belonged toasmallerspecies. We think,
however, that the veuerable Dr. Snell, the
President of that Society, informed us that
he was also in possession of remaius of the
fossil elephant, and tbe object of this paragraph
is to obtain the satisfactory and valuable information which he is capable of giving to the
public.
Tron Barrets.—A correspondent at Detroit
says that a citizen of that place has obtained a
patent for an iron barrel which will be just the
thing for petroleum. It weighs sixty pounds
and with proper machinery a man can turn out
ten or twelve per day.
