803 The Mining and Scientific Press,
Axotuen Cauiforsta NateraL WoxprR.—
The Auburn Stars and Stripes calls the attention of the scientific inquirers to the following
natural curiosity, which the editor assures his
readers is aa uctual retlily and au howx :
Onthe HI Dorado side of the Middle Pork of
the Aiuerican river, nearly opposite Forest
Vill there is u rift or chasin, af cratur-likn appeaniace, in the side of the mountiin which
towers above that stream. ‘This chasin is
about three rods in length, aud an average
width of fitteen fect. Nuimerous aftenipts to
fathom it indicate immense depth, many consideriny it bottomless. Lines af great length
have heen lowered withont reaching the bottom. Large stones have been druppeil into the
crater, ain) the uoise of their striking trom side
to side has resounded until tuo fait for the
acutest sense of heuring. Letter envelopes
dropped into this chasar will hang suspemler
as if ma strong upward curreat, then durt suddeniy down, as by the force of a counter eurrent, and after a lapse of several miontes will
ascend, severul having been recovered, all of
winch were found to be sooty und begrimed.
The conoter-cnrrents of wir would seem to tniliente conuection between this aud other sunilar
chasis, while the discolured uppearance of the
paper indicates the vicinity of subterranean
fires or guses.
Novet Connat.—The New Bedford Standard says that a three months’ Cochia Chit
rogster had rp taortal combat with a Tull yrown
rat recently. ‘The fight was well contested on
both sides, and after a continuance of thirtyfive minutes ended in the death of the rat.
Correr From Piomas.—The Marysville Appeal ot the 5th iast., says: " We noticed yesterday, at the steainer landing, filteen or tweaty
cakes of copper matte, from Taylorville, Piumas
county, for San Francisco.”
Important to Californhins.—Many Inventors have
lately haul thelr clulins tor Vitents seriously (and In some
eases futallyde layed by the unqualitention nt agentS who
have not coinplird withthe Governmentiicense and revenue

PATENT AMALGAMATOR.
These Machines Stand Unrlvalicd.
For rapidly pulverizing aml amalganiaiing ores, they
have noequal. Noeort has been, or wil be, spared to
bave then consiructed in the most perfect nmnner, and of
the great umber now In oycration, not one has ever reae repairs. The constant and increasing demand for
them Is suticient evidence of their merits.
They ure constructed so asto apply steam directly Into
the pulp, or with steant bottoms, as desired,
This Amalgamator Operates as Follows:
The pan belng filled, ihe motion of the muller forces the
pulp to the center, where it is drawn down through the oe
erture and botween the grinding surtaccs, Theuce it is
thrown to the periphery ino the quicksilver, Lhe carved
Plates agaln drnw it to ihe center, where it passes down,
