Information for Inventors!
Inventors on this coast having their applications for patents made
out through our Agency can sign their papers at once, and thus
secure their rights at least three months sooner than by trusting the
same to distant agencies, situated in Naw York or Washington,
The Patent Law Amendment Act, of March 4th, 1861, and
March 3d, 1263, now in foree, introduees several important
ehanges in our Patent System. The genernl practice of the
Patent Office, however, in regard to the examination and
Issue of Letters Patentfor new inveutious, remuing nearly
the same as heretofore.
The amendinent of 34 March, 1863, provides, in sectlon 3.
that cvery patent shallbe dated as ota day not later than
slx months after lhe tline at whieh it was passed und allowed, and netice thereol sentto the applicant or his agent,
And If the final fee for such patent be not paid within ihe
sald slx mouths, the patent shallbe witheld, and the invention thereiu deseribed shall becoine publie preperty as
agalnst the appiicant therefor: Pronided, That in atl eases
where patents have been allowed previous to the passage of
this act, the said slx mionths shall be reckoned froin the date
of such passare.
The first question, therefore, that presents itself to the inventor, who desires to procure a pnient, is: “Can lobtaln a
pulent ® A positive auswer to this qnestion Is only to be had
y presenting a formal application for a patent to the Governmentembracing 2 petition, specification, model, duplicate,
drawings, and the payment of the prescrited offieial tees.
Aside froon these steps, all the Inventor cun do Is, to snbinlt
his plans to persons experienced in the business ot obtaining
Patents, aud solicit their opinion and advice. If the parties
tions “i are honornbie inen, the Inventur nay salely connde his ideas to them, and they will Inform hin whether or
eot lis invention is probably patentable.
Those who have made invent'ons and desire to eonsult
whkb us respecting the same. are cordially invited to do se.
We shail be happy to sce thein in person at our office, or to

Remember that all busIness committed to our care, and all
see est are kept by us secret, aud strietly confidens Caveats.
A Caveat is a confidential communieatlon made to the
Pateut Office, and is therefore filed within its seeret arehlves.
The privilege secured under a earent Is, that it entitles the
eaventor lo receive notice, for a perlud of one year, of an,
npplieation for a patent subseqnently filed, and which is adjndged to be novel, and is likcly to interfere with the InYeutlon described in the cavent, and tbe caveator is then required to conplete his application for 4 patent within three
montlis from the date of said notice. Caveat papers should
he very pe apreDur cds Our fee for the service vnries
from $10 to $20. The Goyerment fee under the new lu is
reduced to ten doliurs; and thissum dees not apply, as
heretufore, as part ot the fee on presenting an appleation
for a patent.
Inventors will ofttimes find It very Important to take advantage of the caveat system—the expense nider the’ law
being comparatively smal!
To enable us to prepare caveat paper, we only require
a sketch and deseription of the invention; no model being
necessary,
Expense of Applying for a Patent, Rejections, ete.
Under the new law, the Government fee, on fillng an application lor x patent, Is fifteen dollars ; aud if tlie patent ts
allowed, twenty dollars additional Ilsrequired. If rejected,
the first fee of fifteen dollars ls all that is demanded. Englsh, Freneh, Austrian, Prugslan Spanish, and inventors of
every nationality, nay now obtain patents in the United
States upon tbe saine terms as our own citizens. The only
discrimination mado Is agalnst subjectsof government that
diserimInate against the Inbabltants of the United States.
To the toregoing offielal tees inust be added the Attorney's
fees for preparing the various doeumneuts and drawlnys.
Our charge for preparing a ease, presenting It to the Gov
ernment, and attending to all business connected with it,
untll a decision ls siven, isfrom $20 to$40. If the patent Is
grantted no further ageney expenses ensues. It the appllcation ls reiected we a cause thorough Investigation to be
tnade Into the reasons presented to the Commissloner for
refusing the patent. In making this examination, we haya
exeess to all the drawings, modcls, books and specifications
elted In reference, and we report the result as eurly as poseihle to our elient.
If the rejection proves to be an unjnst one—which sometlmes happens—it ean generally be reversed, and the patent obtalned by contesting the ease. For this proseeution we
charge a fee proportionate to the extra Inbor involved, payable only on the issue of tho patent; but our demand will be
reasonable and satisfactory to our elients, and will be arranved beforchand hy speclal agreement.
The systein adopted by us works well, fives general satis.
faction and presents to all applicants, rich or poor, an equal
eapertaniy of hnving their patent eases prepared, condueted and presecuted In the best manner, by experleneed attorney’s, npon the most nioderate terms. Inventors who
have rejected eases, prepared cither by themselves, or for
them by other agents, and desire to ascertaln their prospeets of success by further efforts, are invited to avail theinselves of our uneqtalled facilities in securing favorable re.
