Information for Inventors!
Inventors on this coast haring their applications for patents mate
ou through our Agency can sign their papers at once, and thus
secure their rights ut least three mouths sooner than by trusting te
sani fo distant agencics, situated ta New York or Washington.
The Patent Law Amendment Act, of March ith, 1861, and
March 3d, IS63, now In force, Introduccs several important
changes in our Patent Systein. The ycucral practice of the
Puteut Office, however, in regard to the examination and
issne of Letters Palent for new inventions, remains nearly
ohne as heretotore. 5
The amendment of 3d March, 1863, provides, in section 3,
that every patent stall be duted asat'aday not lnter than .
six mantis atter ihe tine at which it wis passed aud allowei, and notice thereof sent to the applicant or his avcnt,
And tt the final fee tor such pateut he not paid within the
said six months, the patent shall be witheld, aud the invention therein described shall became public property ag
against the applicant tlieretor: Proatded, That 1
ere patculs haye becu allowed previous to the passage of
et, the said six mouths shall be reckoned troin the date
af sneh passare.
The first quest
veéntor, wlio di

y nresenting a formal applicatian fora pateut to the Goverumentembracing a petition, specification, model, duplicaic,
drawligs, and the payment of the prescribed otticial tees.
Aside from these steps, all the inventor ean do is, to submit
his plans to persons cxpcricnced in the business of obtaining
patents, and soliclt their opinion and ndvic lf the parties
onsulted are honorable ncn, the inyentor may satcly connde his ideas to them, and they will infornt hin whether or

the Inventionshonid be sent together with astump tor return

Caveats.
A Caveat Is a confidential communicatlon made tn the
Patent Office, and Is thercfare filed within its seerct archives.
The privilege secured under a caveat Is, that it entitles the
eavealor to reccive notice, for a period of ane year, of an,
application for a patent subsequently fled, and which is adjudged to bo novel, and is likely to interfere with the invention described im thie cavent, and the cuvpator is then required to compilcte lis applicntiontor n patent within three
months trom tho date of said notice. Cuveat papers should
be very eer propa ed Our fee for the service varies
from $10 to $20. The Government Ice under the new law is
reduced to ten dollars: and this sum docs not apply, as
heretofore, as part of the Tee on presenting an application
fora patent. .
Inventors will ofttimes find It very hnpovtant to take advantare of the caveat system—tho expense wider the law
being coinparatively small.
To enable us to prepare caveat paper, wo only require
a sketch and description of the invention; uo model bolng
neeessary.
Expense of Applying for a Patent, Rejections, ate.
Under the new law, the Sovernment fee, on filling an npplication for a patent, Is fifteen dollars ; and It the patent is
allowed, twenty dollars additional is reqnired. 1f rejected,
the first fec of fifteen dollars is all that is demanded. EnzJish, French, Austrian, Prussian Spanish, and inventors of
every nationality, may now obtain patents in the United
States upon the saine tcrins as our own citlzens. The only
discrimination made is agalnst subjects of government that
discriminate against the inhabitants of the Unitcd States.
To the foregoniy official fecs must he added the Attoruey’s
fees for preparlug the various dociiments and drawings.
Our charge for preparing a case, presenting Itto the Cov
ernment, and attending to all business connected with lt,
until a decision is given, istrom $20 to $10. It the patent is
grantted no further agency expenses ensues. If the appllCatlon is reiected we s ealsethorough investigation to be
mado Into the reasons presented to the Commissioucr tor
refusing the patent. In muking this examination, we hava
exeess to nll the drawings, models, books and specifications
cited 1u reference, and we report the result as early as possible to our client. .
If the rejection proves to be an unjust one—which sometimes happens—it can generally be reversed, and the patent obtained by contestiug theese. For this prosecution we
charge a tee proportionato to the extra labor involved, payable only on the Issne ofthe patent; but our demand will be
reasonable and satisfactory to our clionts, and will bo nr
ranged heforchaud by special asreement. =
The systein adopted by us works well, elves general satisfaction nud presents to all apyilicants, rich or poor, an ¢qual
Saree ALY, of having thelr patet cases prepared, coudueted and prosecuted In the best manner, by expericuced attorncy's, upon the most modernte terms. Inventors who
have rejected cascs, prepared either by themselves, or tor
thein by other agents, and desire to ascertain thelr pros-,
pects ot snecess by further efforts, are invitcd to avail themselves of our imegualied tacilities In sccuring favorable results. We have been successful in scenring Letters Putent
in inany cases of such a matter. Our terms for sucb cases
are very modcrate.
Models, Remittances, eto.
The law requires that the Inventor shall, In all eases, furnish a inodel, which mnst not exceed twelve inches in any
of Its Chaentions; itshould be nently mude, of hard wood
or metal, or both, varnished or painted; tlo name of the
nyentor should be engraved or pninted on It couspicuouslyWheu the invention consists of au improvement on some
known machine, a tull working model of the whole will not
be necessary. It should be sufficiently perfect, however, to
show, with clearness, the nature and operation of the invention.
Assoon as the model Is reaty, lt should be carefully boxed
and shijiped by express or otherwise, to our address, numely; Dewxr Co., Mining and Sclentifie Press, No. 505
Clay Strect, corner of Sansome, San Franclsco, Cal. Prepay Cxponscs and send express reecipt to us by mall.
Simultancously with the model, the inventor should send
us the first Installment of the Covernment fec, fifteen dolJars. The money nay be forwarded cither by express with
the model, or by mail The safest way to remit is by dratt
un San Francisco, payable toour order. Always send a letA lter w th the model, and also thoremittance stating the naine
and address of the sender.A full deseription should also bo sent with the model, embodying all the Ideas of the Inventor respecting the improveent.
On the recelpt of the model and Coyerninent fee, the case
Is duly registered upon our books. and the applic.tion
proceeded with asias: as possible. Wheu the decmnents
are ready we send then to the luventor by mail, tor lis examination, slgnature nnd aftidavit, with a letter of instrue:
tion, cte. Our fee for preparing the ense Is then due nnd
willbe ealted tor. The case will then be presented to the
Patent O+:ce, and as soon as tlie patent Is ordered to be issued the Government fee, uamely, twenty dollars.
tiventors who do busliuess with us will be notified of the
state of their application In the Putent Office, when It !s possible for usto doso. We do uot require the personal attend:
ance of the inventor, unless it is one of great complication;
the business can be well done by correspoudenee.
When the luvention consists of a now article of manufacture, or a lew composition, samples of the separate ingredients, suficlent tomake the esata and also of the manufactured articlo Itself must be [urnished.
The averaze tlmo required to procure n patent, when the
ease 1s conducted atour agency, is threc inonths, We frequently get them tlrougit In less time ; but In other cases,
owing to dclay on the part of officials, the perlod Is sometimes extended to four or five months, andcven more. We
make a@ special point to torward our cases as rapidly as
Possible.
Patent Office Fees, and How Payable.
Nearly all the fees payable to the Pntent Office are posltively required by law to bo pald In advanco. For the sake
of uniforinity and eonveileuec, the remaining fees will be
required to be yale In the same manner; thatis to say, before the labor is performed for which they are to be recelyed In payment
