The Bining ——e and Scientific Press,
Tue Pnorrarations.—The time for the
opening of the Fifth Exhibition of the Mechanics’ Institute of this eity is repidly approuching. ‘The exhibition will open in two weeks
feom Thursday next—the 1Uth day of August,
at 10 o'clock, A. M. In the mean tite persons intending to contribute to the same
should lose no tiine in making their preparations. Space will be allotted to the exhibitors
who have applied for the snine on or before tte
2d of August; by which time tho pieture gallery will be ready for the reception of pictures.
The motive power will be provided by two
steam engines and a caloricengine. ‘Thestatae
of Lincoln, by Mezzstra, will ‘oeeupy the
eenter of the area beneath the doine. ‘This
statne, hein placed on a pedestal several feet
in hight, wilt be somewhat larger than life, aud
will forin one of the most approprizte and imposing features of the oxhibition. he Old
Folks’ Kitchen, which has attracted so much
attention in late Eastern exhibitioos, of similar
churaeter, will form a leading feutare here.
Swain & Brown are romodeling the restaurant
and promise to uiake it a pleasant retreat. No
time should be lost by those inteoding to apply for space to file their applicationa.
Sa
Socirty.—The pleasure of society depends
more upon females than upon mon, Gentlemen expect to be entertained, children are out
of the question, and therefore it rests upon
woien what society shull be. he pleasure
of an evening's entertainment is graduated by
the capacity of the hostess to interest her
visitors in each other, and make them forget
that thetr own identity is to be lost in the
efforts to make every one at ease, ‘T'liis is the
great seeret of true enjoymeut. Some ladies
will enter a drawiug-rooni or social circle, where
every person's neighbor appears like an iceberg,
and the whole atmosphere is chilly and eonstraited, and by their genial nature and well
timed playfuluess, throw sinshine and warmth
all over the the rooni. till all commtingle in that
easy and yet dignified cordiulity that ever
characterizes true gentility.
The Sheba Mine Report.
To the Shareholders of the Sheba Gold and
Silver Mining Company.
Your Commlitee on mince and mill, under Instruetlons
to puhlish thelr Gndings, respectfully report that they
bave passod eighteen duys iu tho discharge of their duty,
ani that they thoroughly examined the property and investigated the atfuirs of the company in Star district, Humboldtcouuty, Nevada. Wo lind that Mr. Rule, who has
charge of tho miug, at a point four huudred fect from the
mouth of the tuuncl, diseovered a pay seam, upon which
he has drifted oue hundred and filty feet, it coutinuing the
onlire distance This seam, wheu discovered, was exceedfugly narrow, but has gradually widened, and although it
yiclls but a small quantity of oro daily, gives promise of
a rich reward lo its progress,us auy duy the chiinney—the
croppings of which (eouuuniug ore extuhit themsely es five
huudred feet above, may he siruck 5 and that is the poiut
Mr. Rule has been running fur the past three mouths.
This pay lead Is well defined hy erossings, and is almost
vertical, and gives great promiso of au abuudauco of ore
of valu’
The mine Is heing developed with the strictest economy,
the total expense heing about fifteen hundred dollars per
month, We find that from 125 to 150 tous of ore, worth
$150 por toa, has been exeavated, aud that as much more
is aceessable, but of an Inferior quality. Tho ore in the
north drifl in the regular pay seam uboye
arich charactr, We hetievo tho indications for a well defined lode at that poiat could not he hetier, and we would
suggest the shareholders to stand by Mr. Rule in pushing
that drift forward. The Commitice disapprove of stars
ing the mill ou the oes exciv.tel until the work progresses lo a puint entirely Independent of the disturbed portion of the moontaia, when we enn with more certainty
determine whether or nut the inill eim he kept const.ntly
reuubiig. This, also. in view of the fact thita large outJay of money will le required to start up the init, as tbe
Toil-workmen Mist bo transported from remote paiits at a
largo expense to them. Bvi fly, we heheve, we lave now
& geod and perm ipent mine, aud that if the shareholders
advertised as delinqueut would inspuct the property, their
Dames woull not so uppear, We must herestate, that the
work of forwarding tho uortb drift to the desired point
cannot be prosecuted much loager unless the deliuqnent
nssessmvnts are atoneo pald, as large sums are duc the
Workmou for their lehar, who lave only labored so long
and taithlally, ag they. assert, bulicving ‘the mine will soun
be in suecesstul operation, But if the assessments now
advertised as deliuqucnt, are not paid, they will work no
longer. They wnst aod should cecelye gome nioucy to
enable them ta continuo tovlevelop the mine,
4 the complaints of the large amonut of assossmeuts
tbat have heen lovicd, white reulizing that fiet ourselves,
we fiud thut large sums were neeexsury in the opening of
thls mine, aud helinvo if the Sheha mine was located near
Virgiuia City mueb larger sums would have been cheerfully expended in Its dovelupment, if found veeessary.
We fiud the managemcut at the mino execlleut, and if tho
delinquent sharcholders will pay up, there would remaiu
eightor uine thousaad dollars after the paymeut of all the
indebteduers, aud we believe no further assessment would
bo required to enable Mr. Rulo to Rnish his present work.
We lind the mill will require the expeudituie of 4 small
Bum of inouey to rendér it the best mill in the State. A
watchman is employed te look after the mill and furnaces
and the stores, consisting of mill and mine materials sulGeient for over six montns. The books aud aceouuts of
the olfecrs are well arranged, and, we are satisfiod, are in
proper bands.
fu conclusion, we would state that the present depres:
sion of the s.ock is in no wise owing to the condition of
our alfairs at S'ar City. Lot these purtics who placed an
jujunctiou on certain of the stock remove the same, the
other stock carrying two or three assessments would be at
onee frec!, and with (be cousequent healthy condition of
tho fnances the merits of tho mine would rapidly advayce
tho stock to its proper figure.
