Tue Mawprosa Ksrare.—It will he recollected that we stated some time since, that the
mauagemnent of the Mariposa estate had heen
placed in the hands of the Messrs. Dodge &
Bros., a well known business firm of this city,
expressing the utmost confidence that such an
arrangeinent would result most satislactorily to
all parties concerued. ‘The result appears to
haye realized our anticipatious. By tlic latest
dates from New York, we notice that this stock
has now an apward tendency in the market,
and the affairs of the company are nssuming a
state most satisfactory to the stockholders.
The note for $50,000, with interest in gold, due
under the “ Garrison Settlement,” on the 20th
ot Juns, was promptly paid. It will he recollected thatthe arrangement with the Messrs.
Dodge was upou a lease made to them under
terms of which they were, to pay off the California indehtedness, which, on the 27th of
April last, amounted to $37,000, iu addition to
$66,000 due the workmen on the estate, making a total indehtedness of $113,000 in gold.
This amonnt, it is confidently expected, will
soon he materially reduced under the businesslike and economical management of Messrs.
Dodge & Bros. The placing of this large nud
valuahle property under ths management of
political lawyers and specnlators, who had oo
acquaintance with mine management, has heen
disastrous in the extreme ; a result which must
ever be entailed upon such policy wherever
initiated. We trust its future will hs as prosperous as its past has heen disastrous.
B, F. Barxer’s Concearep Door Sprine.
—This door spring was invented hy B. F. Barker, No. 36 Webh street, San Francisco ; patent applied for in April, 1865. It will he
shown at the coming Fair of the Mechanics’
Institute, in model and in full working size, as
applied to doors. It is quite unlike auy other
doer spring in its application, and also in its
working. ‘Ihe manner in which it is applied
does not tend to weaken the door or tear it
from its hinges, hut rather to keep it firm in its
place, and prevent it from sagging. When the
door is opeued toan angle of 45 degrees, ths
spril gis nearly at its greatest expansion, so
that op the last quarter of opening, the spring
gradually loses its power upon the door, and
the slightest ohstruction will keep it open if
desired. The door closes without any dependence onthe momentum. Tbe cam, or lever,
attached to the hracket, causes the spring to
work in a parallel line, aud its great lcngth
warrants it to work for years without relaxing
in the least. : This spriog may be applied to
parlor or inside doors, for its working is so
easy and silent that a were child can opep the
door. And last, hut not least, the door remains
undefaced and without blemish, and the spring
will work for years as perfectly as when put on.
Most springs in use require great effort ou account of increased strain ou the last quarter of
the opening of the doors; hut this spring has
its greatest tension at ahout half way open,
and gradually relaxed in shutting. ‘I'he spring,
after closing, still holds its grip and keeps the
door snugly closed.
Tue Norra AuMaAvEN Quicksitver Minn —
We recently paid a visit®to this company's
aias, in company with Capt. Paul, the superintendent ond one of the owners. The oatcrop of the mins presents cvery evidence of
the company being able to find a large deposit
of mineral at an inconsiderahle depth, ‘Ihey
are now engaged in ruoning a tunnel to strike
it in depth, and nre also sinking a shaft for the
same purpose. Quite a quantity of pay rock
hag already heen taken out. ‘{he mine is located on the Farnsworth Rapch, in a northeasterly direction from the New Almaden, and
distant therefrom ahout ten milcs, There is
plenty of fine water and timher upon the claim,
and a plateau has heen selected upou which
to erect reduction works, furnaces, ete. <A
location has also heen selected for a town site,
upon which hpsipess lots will he presented to
actual settlers, ‘he mine has heen worked
only a few weeks, but with Capt. Faul's large
experience in quicksilver mining, he can harcly
fail of producing a rich return to the proprietors associated with him, who are O. L. Craodell, C.D. Putuam, and George Winchell, of
San Jose.
‘We have received the following letter from
a well known citizen of Nevada, in relation to
the Santa Barhara meteor. The letter was accompanied by a private note, in which the writer fixes the momeut of observation at thirtyfive minutes past seven o’clock P. M., Austin
heen five or ten minutes out of the way.
Mr. Rolfe thiuks that if the meteor had been
noticed alter dark it would havs afforded as
much light as the full moon. He was sittiug
at the tie on the outside seat witb the driver,
and had a fine opportunity for noticing it.
The observations of Mr. Rolfe nre very valuahle. We should like to hear from other obasrvers, if there are any, who may have seen
the meteor from any other point with sufficient
distinctness to give us their point of ohservation, the direction in which it was seen, its angle of elevation, and the apparent direction of
its motiou. We subjoin Mr. Rolfe's letter :
Nevapa, July 25, 1864.
Epirors Mtnino Press :—My attention was
called, yesterday, to an article in your last
issue, giving au account of the metvor seeu at
Santa Barhara on the evening of the 12th
instant, and the request for further informatiou
as to the meteor seen at the same time by the
stage passengers on the overland road. As I
was the person who gave the inlormation to
the Gazette aud National, of this county, I
will endeavor to give the particulars you ask
for. The point of observation was some twenty-eight or thirty miles east of Virginia City,
on the overland road—perhaps twenty-five
miles by an airline. ‘he meteor was seen
almost due south from that point. Its angle
of elevation, ag nearas J can judge, was from
twelve to fifteen degrees, and its motion was
easterly, incliniug a little towards the horizon.
Its apparent magnitude was about the samme as
described by Dr. Jacksou ; thnt is, of a sixpound cannon ball, and was as brilliant aa the
sau. It was visible from twenty to thirty seconds, moved very slowly, when it hreke into
three or four pieces, the largest fragment apparently dropping on top of a mountain, and the
smaller lagving hehind a few moments, and
then disappearing. No stars were visible at
the time, except the planet Jupiter. Itleft no
train or illumination in its path, as noted hy
the ohservers nt Santa Barhara; hut as it was
seen at almost the samme moment ot hoth
places, I judge it to be the same meteor.

Suppen Deata.— We are pained to annouue
that Mr. Wm. Fell died in this city on Tharsday. He had heen sufferiug for a long time
from chronic rheumatism, which, however, did
not prevent his attending to business, and
searcely a week ago we met him ou the street.
He was a native of Denmark and some fifty
years of age,nnd asa faithful and efficient
mining secretary, was well and favorahly
known. From long hussiness connection with
him, we can say truly, that a more prompt ond
honorahle business man it has never heeu onr
lot to meet.
Goop Prosrrets ror Our Iron: ManvracTuRERSs.—In Jauuary, 1864, the number of
niles of completed railroad in the Northern
States was nearly 25,000, and in the Southern
States about 9,000 miles. So much of the
latter, however, has heen destroyed aud worn
out, that it may be said nearly the whole must
‘be rencwed. ‘This will-for the next few years
make a tremendous demand on the various
mannfactories of railway material, aud the
capacities of Pennsylvania in this respect will
he taxed to their utmost.
Cave in THE Goutn & Curry.—A small
cave of some fifteen or twenty tons of rock,
occurred in the Gould & Cnrry mine op Monday last, at 2 Pp. 1. Fortunately no one was at
work except Mr. Cullen, oue of the miners,
who got his hand cut a little hy one of the
falling timhers. He was not seriously hurt.
Small caves are quite frequent in our miues,
and it is a wonder that more people are pot
hart than there is— Virginia Union.
Montana.—A new offspring of the Republic, horn in the war, it is a sturdy ian child,
hearty and thriving. In an existence of only
. thres years, it has gathered into its horders au
earnest, working population of fifty thousand
. whites, who may be fairly presumed to he that
; indelatigable apd energetic race who people
our new Territories.
Rica Minrs ix Sierra Counry.—One of the

this season, and various others from $20,000 to
$10,000.

The Desp anv THR Livino.—Froni a correspondent of the Gazelle, of Augshurg, we
learn that the pontifical expends, every year,
in masses for souls in purgatory, 800,000 franes,
while for the hudget of public iostraction it
pays ouly 214,000 francs, :
Prrrspure has just fioished a perfect model:
of the famous rebel iron-clnd Merrimac, and
also a monitor, as a contiibntion to the great
sanitary fair at Chicago. ‘The vessels, though —
of course hy no means equal in size to their
prototypes, are yet of good dimeusions, nnd
furvished with machinery, guns, etc., complete.
