Me. Lixcouy’s Favomre Porm—Quite a
little discussion took place recently in this city,
with regard to the authorship of a certaiu very
fine piece of poetry, which was a great favorite
with Mr. Lincoln, Its authorship was claimed
for him by the #lagq, of this city. The Boston
Commonwealth says it was written by William
Kuox, a poet of cousiderable talent in Kdinbure, Scotland. It was first published in 1825.
— Mining and Scientific Press.
The poem to which the Press refers is
headed, “ Oh, why should the spirit of mortals
be proud.” It was written by William Knox,
and may be found in a collection entitled “ The
Sacred Poets of England and America,”
edited by Rufus W. Griswold. Knox wag a
taan of promise, but died at the age of thirtysix, in Edinburg, in 1825. The following
verse, which slionld be the seventh, is omitted
from the verses, as published in the papers :
‘(The sniut who eujoyed the commenion of Heaven,
‘The smner who dared to remain nuforgiven,
The wise and tho foolish, the suilty and just,
Havo quietly miug'ed their bones in the dust.”
—AMorning Cail.
