“The Mining and Scicutifie Press, Inportast Meotca. Exrerinests.— Among the reeent discoveries noted, are new methods of administering remedies. Vhirse as n cliss are generally, perhaps too generally, viewed with suspicion by the fueully us so muny new forms of empirical speciulity in treutment. ‘Khe error, however, is not in examjning but in tou hastily ar exelusively udopting new methods. Every lovir of tre science yields to a fulse professtonul pride who forgets thut the injuaction “Hold fast thnt which iz good,” comes after the precept to “prove ull things.” Heth the abuve new clussea are muder the general rank of progress aitning to reach the circulating system by somn other channel than the digestion. In one sinall springe discharges the medicine throngh a sharp pointed nozzle that punctures the skin und injects the preserlbed qununtity mueli nfter the mainer of a snuke bite, or the sting of an insect, the discoverer claiming thnt the proof of the noxious influence so reudtly > eammunieuted, furnishes the hiut thnt renediul results may be sitnilarly renched. The other discovery indulges in the bunorous title “ Nephetherupy,” anil consists of reducing the remedial agent to acloud or spray to be inhuled; a moditication of the familar vapor system, and is applicuble to alt clusses of liquid medicinal prepurations, especially in throat and lung disnages. Frsate Astronomer.—Miss Maria Mitchell is to be Professor of Astronomy in the Vassar Femnle Colluge, in Poughkeepsie—a pasition whieh her eeqnirements ta science adinirably fit herto Gll, She is widely known in the seientific world ag the discoverer of a conret known by ker name aud for which she received a guld mednl from the King of Denmark, together with the still nore Tonoruble apprubation of the savans of Kurope. Aw international exhibition of fish will be held at Bergen, the coming summer, ombrucing fish of all kinds from the whale to the minnow, lishing tnekle, preservatives of fish, models of boats, barrels, boxes, &e.; and it is believed that our own fisbermen will nppear ut it. An “ Gxhibiton of Iosects” is to be the next novelty in Paris. MINING LAWS AND FORMS. Third Edtilon revised and entarged., Compiled by H. B. THE EXCELSIOR GRINDER AND AMALGAMATOR, In the engraving herewith Pan; B, Muller G, Lever; H, Dash-Boards; I, Key; a@, Dics; c, Shoes, and 0) ‘ presented, A represents the Rim of the c, legs ; D, Cross-Frame; E, Genring; F, Scre The relative grinding capacities of “The Excelsior’ Grinder and Amalgamator, of the FInt Bottomed Pnn, und of the Conical Pun when properly constructed, are respectively 177, 98 and 110. That is, tho respective mniers being of the some diameter, samo weight, same hardness, and running at the snme velocity, “The Excelsior Grinder and Amalgamiator” will reduce onc handeed and seventy-seven tons of ore, the Flat Bottomed Pan ninetyeight tous, nnd the Conicul Pan one hnndred and ten tons to tbe samo degree of fineness in the same time. The wear to the Shoes and Dies at their grinding surfaces in tho ‘Excelsior Grinder and Atnalgamator, is perfectly uniform, thus securing evenness of reduction to the pulp, as well us steadiness of motion to the muller. Uniform wenr of the grinding plates has been attained in no other than tbat of the Tructory form—nor Another property of excellence in tbis machine Is that the metal or substance to be amulgamated passes direct from the grindmg surfaces into tho quicksilver; thus exeluding the possibiliry of its beeoming conted with any foreign substances, nfier having been burnished. It is truthfully said “that the Tractory-formed Pan as n Grinder has no equal, and as an Amalgamator no suporior.”” As a whole, it is far superior to nny other pun in use.
