94 Ghe Aiining antl Scientific Press, a “Nor a Tree 1n Srost!”—There®is much of human nature—much of what all have felt who have lived in grove-dotted Jands—in the following story from the plains. An old grayheaded man, from the walnut-shaded streams of Towa, was lying at the point of death in his wagon, which was then in the middle of what appeared a boundless desert. His friends felt it a duty to tell him that his end was near, that he might take leave of his family and arrange his affairs before Death, with icy clutch, . seized upon him. The old man was told that he could not live through the day. “ Lift me up, boys, and let me look out upon the, country,” said the patriarch. He was lifted up, and fora time his fastglazing eyes were turned hither and thither, when he said: “Lay me down, boys ; you mnst carry me on ; I cannot die here; there is not a tree in sight!” The old man is yet alive, and is now “hale and hearty.” ' How Rarimiy Fisu Caanez Cozor—The chauge of color in fish is most remarkahle, and takes place with great rapidity. Put a living. trout from a black hurn into a white hasin of water, and it becomes, within half an hour, of . alight color. Keep the fish living in a white jar for some days, and it hecomes absolutely white ; hut put it then into a dark colored or hlack vessel, and although on first heing placed there the white colored fish shows most conspicuously on the hlack ground, in a quarter of an hour it becomes as dark colored as the bottom of the jar, and consequently difficult to be seen. No doubt this facility of adapting its color to the bottom of the water in which it lives, is of the greatest service to the fish in protecting it from its numerous enemies. All anglers must have ohserved that in every stream the trout are very much the same color as the gravel or sand. Whether this change of color is a voluntary or involuntary act on the part of the fish, is a matter for scientific investigation and discussion. ‘We have often formed the wish—and afterwards made a picture out of it—that we could he'present at all the reconciliations in the world, because no love is so heautiful, or moves us so deeply, as returning love. ° KELLOG CRERK PETROLEUM AND MINING COMPANY.
