Che Blining and Scientific Press either by means of regular smelting works (fornos y Vasos de afinacion), or by the application of quicksilver in the open « Patio” process (Amalgamacion ), which latter is the most resorted to at present. The yield ranges as fullows : First elnss metal will give from $2,000 to $4,000 per ton of 2,000 Ibs, and as high us $32,000, which is the intrinsie value of pure silver. Second “ “ from $800 tu $2,000, Third “ Ore “ $150 to $800. cording to care in asFourth“ “ © $69 to $100 sorting. Althongh for a considerable portion of the ores n roasting process, hefore bringing them to the “ Arrastra” (Mill), would be fadvisahle, yet it has, however, not been followed out. Instend of which, the metalic residue or “tailings” (polvtllos ) is preserved until a sufficient quantity is collected to make it worth while to treat it in the smelting furnnees, where, hy volatilization, a small part will he lost. These tailings, consisting of various pyrites (arsenical, antimonial, ete.) and snlphurets, will nut nnialgamate with the quicksilver in the “patiu,” but $100 to $800 to tlic ton. THE MINERAL VEINS of this Distriet are characterized by all those nttrihutes appertaining to such. They show distinctly their strike (rumbo), their dip (hechado) or inclination, and lay encased hetween the upper aud lower selvages “respaldo alto y bajo”). Their structure is very formal. THE MATRIX of the lodes seem to be of different natures. One class seems to have qunrtz or flint with copper pyrites; the other, “calspar.” The Intter ones appenr to he by far the richest, and to bave mainly produced those immense masses of native silver whicb made Batopilas su justly celebrated. As a general rule, the metn] in them does not commence before the depth of from 20 to 40 yards, when certain signs and well understood judications inform the persevering miner of the presenee, eitber helow or ahead, of a silver deposit. Principally among these INDICATIONS (“ PINTAS ”) are the appearance of lead or iron pyrites, small crystals or specks of a yellowish hlende (copalillo), and black or red sulphurets (cardenillo ). Galena, ns a general thing, is not found running on to any distance, hut mostly on and near the surface, and of a poor ley (eontents of silver). The metal or ores are found to continue less, in large masses, in a longitudinal direction in tbe lode, hut invariahly increase when going perpendicularly. The veins may even run for a considerable distance, hoth ways, entirely harren, without even showing any of the usual armament, such as “calspar” or “horrasca ;” yet the parts in ore are extremely ricli, so that a single strike frequently turns out a large fortune. On the whole, the harren parts of the lodes seldom run more than forty aras in length; so that after cutting through this distance, the ore or nietal is generally again found of more or less richness. We know of two mines, “San Antonio” and “ Pastrana,” the first of which was worked at the begining of the present century, during fourzeen years, and the latter during e¢ghteen, both in a continual stream of silver, withofit interruption. A very interesting, as well as favorable point, occurs in Batopilas, hy the frequent occurence of smaller threads (/7ilos ), either crossing the main vein, or uniting themselves with it; containing, likewise, the precious metal, sometimes in really such astonishing quantities that it will pay well to work them; although they may commence with the thiekness of a knife-bladc, on a sudden they will widen out. per ton, varying acwill also give from THE ROCK of which the Batopilas mountains are composed, is principally “ Diorite,” extremely complicated with Granite or Syanite (compact feldspar with hornblend), with trausitions to dioritic porphyry, or affanite. It partly presents itself with a fine grain without hornhlcnd, and at other times dividing into masses of different forms, like conglomerate, due prohahly to its elevation. Micarious porphyry forms sometimes the upper or lower wall of the granite, and unites, often, so intimately with it, that it is with extreme difficulty the respective ages of the rocks can he decided, Granite is chiefly found on the northern side of the “ Animas” mountain, and as high up as the “Arhitrios” and “Roncesyalles” mines, of a gray or light reddish color, with a fine grain and little quartz and black mica, with some crystals and feldspar, or of a coarser grain with dark gray color, but neither sort being stratified. This latter (stratified) rock is only found in a few localities, such as a part of the south side of the “ Cerro de Animas,” where the “ Santa Teresa” mine lays; also in the “ Cata” and “ Pastrana” miues. On the north side of the same mountain, a small stretch on the spur, the “Baltazar” mine is found, and some other places on the San Autonio and Nevada Hills. THE NUMBER OF MINES which in former times were worked in the mineral district of Batopilas to a ore or less degree, can certainly not fall short of a hundred, while those actually in operation will hardly come up toa dozen or two. Those most favorably looked upon by the mining population, are at the present day, nlmost without exception, held by individuals as property by way and right of denouncement. THE RIVER, which flows throngh the valley, contains, nll the year round, a good body of water, which moves the J/actenda of Mr. John Rohinson, of sutlicient capacity to do nll the custom work for tlose mines at preseut developed and in operation; the water heing enough to propel those Hactendas that may in future he erected. THE CLIMATE of Batopilas, during the winter mouths pleasant and wnrm, is, however, hot in the summer. Few cases of sickness are kuown—priucipally of the “Calentura” (fever); the poor ignorant people seldom have the means on hand to cure themselves, or are too indolent to use the remedies recommended to them, THE HILLS are mainly covered with a thick growth of thorny bushes, among which the “ Torote,” the “ Mansto,” the “ Varaprieta,” which might serve for medicinnl purposes. Of higher growing trees there are but few, and these only in the valley along the river course: the “ Guamachil,” the “Mezquite,” and once in a while a “Tepehuaje” in the humid parts of the ravines. Oaks, in various species, and pines, cover the more elevated pnrts and tops of the mountains, furnishing the timher required for building purposes and for ladders in the mines, while the most luxurious grasses every where cover the higher ridges. THE COMMUNICATION of Batopilas with the outer world is still very limited—due to its position in the mountains, and its insignificant traflic as yet not requiring any closer connection. Every month now of its reviving progress makes a regular and efficient one more and more imperious. Whatever the present population requires for its consumption of the necessaries of life, is from time to time brought down from the mountains. ‘The entire carrying trade is done on mule-back, and principally from and to the town of El Fuerte, distant about five days journey in the saddle, hut of eighteen to twenty days for pack animals (Atajos). The freight paid to this place averages from $6 to $8 per carga of 300 pounds, or he it $39 to $52 per ton of 2,000 pounds. The same, or a little more, is paid to and from the town of Alamos, in the State of Sonora, of six days distance. Communieation between Batopilas aud San Francisco, California, may he had either via Mazatlan, Navachiste and El Fuerte, or via Guaymas, Santa Barbara and Alamos. ‘The first route meets with the drawhack that Mazatlan is not a safe port all the year, and the coasting trade at Navachiste is difficult for the reason of the strong N. W. winds prevailing, detaining the small crafts perhaps months in the accomplishment of their trips; whereas Guaymas, one of the best ports in the world, undisturbed in any kind of weather, affords the greatest safety in landing and shipping. The small coasters going south to Santa Barbara, accomplish their voyages in a day or two without accidents. The distance from the latter place to Alamos is ahout twentysix leagues of a perfectly level wagon road. I may also mention, that in case of disturbances at Alamos, the route of Navachiste, from Guaymas, could he taken. The object of these lines is to inform the reader that there is no difficulty of communication, and that the Guaymas route is preferable to that of Mazatlan. THE PRINCIPAL ARTICLES of consume at Batopilas are either acquired from the villages of Chois, Baymena, or the small Indian towns and ranchos scattered in the valleys of the Sierra, and over the mountain sides, inhabited by the very numcrous half civilized trike of “ Tarumaris.” The average prices at which such artieles of daily consnmption are sold, by the quantity, are as follows: SS ee ee $6 00 to #8 00 Beans, “ © GMO coc 2 a oo cana, 8 00 to 10 00 Brown Sugar {panocha),per carga of 600 pieces 24 06 tu 28 00 Chile colorado, per almud................ 73 Beef, fresh, per pound... ............05. 124 do dried “ one ovogmpanoD Dass 25 Charcoal, per carga of 4 arruhas,......... 100 to 1 25 Firewood, “ © osow dogo tmeyoncs coe 874 Salt, per dancon.: erase ee. cer mC OUNELO MEROMUG Lard, per arraha of 25 pounds............ 600 to 9 00 Flour, per carga of 300 tbs............ ... 25 00 to 80 00 Tallow, per arraba of 25 tbs... ... ...... 5 00 to 7 00 Soap, per carga of 300 Ibs......... ...., 26 00 to 30 00 Tobacco, per arraha of 25 tbs............ 10 00 to 12 00 Oxhides, green, per piece............---. 100 to 1 25 — fanned Weems. sce... eee OOOO MET GOO) The wood used for mining and huilding purposes sells likewise very high, as it has to he hrought down during the rainy season from the mountain tops, with considerable trouble. she Exeheqner at7 per share, 33. 10 she Iinperini at 120 per share, b 30, 60 shs Imperial at U8@li8sg per share, 8 $0. 45 shs Imperial at 120 per sharo. 33 she Contidence at 49@51 per share, H1 sus Bulllon at 66@62 per share, 10 shs Bullion at 65 per sbare, s 3, 10 sh Bulllon at 66 per share, b 36 60 shs Wide Wost at 944 per share. 48 shs Lady Bryan at 1@3 874 per share, $36,750 Legal Tender Notes at 733{e, APTERNOON SESSION. 6shs Savage at 200@500 por foot.
