During the recent ugitation of the currency question by the Leryisliture of this State, with a view to a repeal of the Specifie Cuntraet
Law, a large number of deposits were withdrawn from several of the
ubove institutions, particularly from the Elibernin; but sinee the final
vote in the Sennte against the proposed change, conlidence has been
restored, nnd the reflux is even greater thnu before. As is well known:
the loans mado by these associutions are seenred by mortgages upon
first-class real estate, nnd repnyable in monthly installments. ‘The
Hibernia Savings and Loan Society declared, during the past six
months, dividends of oue $ cent. per mouth; the S. F. Savings Union
declared 1 1-5 @ cent. per month to term depositors, nud 1 G cent. to
ordinnry. The California Muilding divided 1!j 9@ cent. per month,
Pending the action of the Legislature, it was deeined prudent to carry
unusvnlly heavy cash balauees, which, of course, decrensed the pereentaye depositors derived from the gross gains; but this is no leuger
necessary, and loans are now made with more freedom.
The Money Market presents no new feature. <A feir degree of activity prevails, and the current rate in bnnk is L@l1y % cent. per
month, with occasional trausactions upon more favorable terms to the
borrower.
R. ceipts of treasure from domestic sourees, sinee our last reference,
hnve amounted to uiue hundred thousand dollars, making au aggregate
ol seme three million dollars thus far during the eurrent mouth. Bal
lion has been in good demund for shipping purposes, and sales of gold
bars were made nt about 850; silver bars range Irom 3,4 to 1 Y cent.
premium.
Legal Tender Notes are dealt in at tbe Board to the. extent of

advices from the East quote gold at 137.
