Om 1n Cotorapo,—The Denver News chronicles the fioding of large quautities of oil in
that Sate. It says: We have every reason
to belive, from the indications and discoveries
made, that portions of our Territory are as rich
in petroleum as the celebrated Pithole District
in Pennsylvania. Near Caoyon City,a we . is
now yielding twenty-four barrels per day ol the
best quality of “green oil.” This well is only
eeventy-five feet in depth, and is the only well
that has beeu sunk for oil io the Territory.
Some others are goiog down, but tone have
as yet reached sny coneiderable depth.
Practica Epvostion.—Among the novelties recently added to the Santa Clara College,
eays the San Jose Mercury, is a printing
press, witha fine assortment of new type. ‘The
mechanic rrts are oow carried to a greater extent in this college than any other institution
of the kind in this country. Wlectrotyping,
daguerreotyping, telegraphing, practical assayjog, engineering, printing, and various other
arts and sciences are thoroughly taught. ‘wo
companies of cadets are also thoroughly trained
in military tactics.
Tue Term Coppernead.—lt is perhaps worthy of interest, as settliog any controversy that
may arise, that the word “Copperhead” was
first used io a political sense hy Mr. John
Russell Young, now of the Tribune, in a letter
from Washiogton to the Philadelphia Press.
This occurred in August, 1861.
