The Mining and Scientific Vress.
Tne Purse.—The uction of the pulse will,
po doubt, be of much interest to oar readers.
Tt probably ia not known to piany that the
pulze of a lemale exceeds in frequency thot of
a male from ten to fyurteen beats per niaate.
Many circuitstances influence its action, such
ag muxcolur exertivn, mentul excitement, the
state of the digestive orzuns, nnd the position
of the body, whether lying, sitting, or stuuding.
Muscular actiun and mental excitement, ua
also the process of digestion, nuturally increaso
i, it being much quicker during the process
of digestion than wheu digestion has takeu
lace.
In healthy males. from twenty-five to thirty
yeara of age, the nverage of the polse per miaute, in a standing position, is from ecverty-nine
tovizhty-one, stlting, frome seventy-nine to
ninely-one, nad lying dowa, from sixty-six to
gixty-seven—making a difference of frow nine
ty ten beats between standing and sitting, from
funr to tive between sitting and lyrng, and
from thirteen to fourteen beats between standing and lying. 1 healthy fetnales, of the same
ave, it will be fonnd frum eiyhty-two to uinetyone, standing ; eility-one to eighty two si'ting,
and eighty to eighty-utte lying. ‘The variatton
in the diffureut positions is produced by the
ntuscular action induced by the chungo of position.
At the different periods of the day the pulse
varies, 03, fur inatauce, in a healthy person it is
most frequent in the ineraing, and gradually
decreasvs toward eventug. After excitement,
the diminution is greater and more regular it
the evening thnu im the morning. Food has
the caine effect on it ut these periods, for, in
Matry instances, the same food thal will increase
its amount and daration in thy morning, will,
in the evening, hinve no effect whatever. Dur.
iny the hours of eleep there is a greater dimtaation.
The following tnble will show its variations
al different periods of life, being greater in
chitdhood than in old age, aad gradually dimiaishing as we grow older:
