The Sandwich fslands are destined to serve the eame puiposo to the western coast of North America that the West India Islands have so long done to the eastern portion of this Coatinent and to Europe—they are to become the great source from whence we are to receive onr supply of sugar and tropical fruits. ‘Ihe suzur cane is indigenous to those Islands, and can be cultivated there to its highest degree of perfection. Upon this group there are already about thirty-three sugar plantations, the first of which was commenced about the year 1847; but was not cousidered a successful enterprise until some fonr years after. Since 1855 the sugar interests there have continued steudily to inereaso, until the present time. ‘he exports of sugar lust yeur reached the large amount of 15,000,000 pounds. A very large quuntity of molusses was also exported. This gronp of Islands consists of thirteen in nnoiber, five of which are, however, mere islets; the other cizlt are inhabited, coutaining a population of about 75,000 souls, with an area of nearly 7,000 eqnare miles. JTawaii is the largest and . most eastern of the group, and contains more superficial territory than the eutire Slate of Connecticut. The Islands are mountainons, with beautiful slopes, and contain numerous fertile valleys. They are situated almost directly in the track of several very important sea routes; besides heing themselves the principal depots for the Pacific whaling fleet. They are almost in a direct line between this city and Japau and China. The capital, and principal port of the group, is Honolalu, which is situated on the island of Oaln. A steam propellor is kept conslantly rauning between tbe capital and the other isiands of the group. ‘The produce of all the islands is collected at Honolulu, from whence all exports are made. A large fleet of interisland schooners is employed in this business. The number of sugar plantations has doubled within the past three years. ‘The Government of the Islands is modeled very much afler that of Great Britain. Several of the larger plantations yield annually from 700 to 800 tons of sugar. Native labor is chiefly employed ; although receutly numbers of coolies have been imported. Ttese coolies are landed there at a contract cost of $80 each, and bound for five years at a monthly rate of wages of from $4 to $5, and found. The principal thing now needed to develop the resources of these islands is capital; the requirements for which are very lurge in plantntion business. All the sugars now raised there are consumed on this coast, and yet the supply from that source is but a little over oneSAN FRANCISCO, SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 1866. this cluss of maehinery. aud are now prepared to execute orders for any kind which may be reqnired either in the produetion of the raw material, or for refining purposes. In the annexed engraving we give a reprerentation of a set of sugar rolls, to be driven by harse power, or which muy be readily adjusted lor steam or water. This apparatus consists of three heavy iron rollers, keyed on heavy wrought iron shafts, working in properly constructed bearings, fitted into massive cast iron bead stocks, the whole firmly bolted toa heavy iron bed plate, which also forms the pan inte which the ‘cane juice is received, from the
first operation to which it is subjected. ‘The machinery required in the manafacture and refining of sugur is among tbe most expensive and complicated of auy which entera into third of tho demand for this port. ‘here isno. the range of industrial pursuits ; and the esreason why the business there may not be indefinitely increased, even beyond the immiediate demand here, by seeking foreign markets. The city of San Francisco has an important interest in the building up of the sugar business at the Sandwich Islands, from the fact that such an industry will call for a large amount of machinery, which must be furnished from this city. Steam engines, boilers, sugar rolls, evaporating pans, water and horse pow‘erg, gearing, slrafting, conducting pipes, ete., will be wanted, just in proportion to the extent of the busivess. Numerous orders for this kind of muchinery have already been filled ; and the demand therefor is rapidly increasing, The first nvachinery introduced at the Islands was obtained trom Mngland. Experience, however, has proven that it can be now ecouomically perchased in San Francisco. ‘The proprietors of the Miners’ Fonadry have taken wuch pains to procure the latest and most approved drawings and specifications for} Total...2....a ‘ tablishmeut of a heavy interest of this kind on the Pacific Coast, supported by the raw material drawn from the neighboring islands, cannot fail to add largely to the extent of the mechauical interest of San Francisco. The quality of TTawaiinn raw sugars averages very hizh, und it is gratifying to remark the satisfactory resnits which have generally attended the sugar iuterests of the Islands during the past year. It is also a matter of congratulution and a most significant fact, that Hawaiian sugars haye reached the highest value on onr list of imports, although the quantity imported is exceeded by tbat from Manila. From official returns at our Custom House, we eather the following snmmary of weigbt and value of Sugars imported into San Francisco during the year 1865, reéeipts of which were divided as follows : Hawaiian Islands Tes 18.554.505 $862,617 Mawih 14 468 140 545,935 Pei, 3,129,101 202.242 Chisa 2.276.100 112.581 All other pluce: 1,830 487 57,520 veveseefbS 34,958,402 $1,780,795 Tue Canmornia Buiwpina anp Loan Society.—This institution, which was first inaugurated some five years since, under the chief management of Mr. Thomas Mooney, ita present president, has recently greatly enlarged its sphere ef usefulness, and is now a joint stock company with 400 partners, managed by nine directors, with a paid up capital of $250,000. The socicty has purchased and fitted up a very fine building for a banking honse, on California street, next door above Sansome. The principal object of this iustitution is to assist industrious persons to erect dwellings for homesteads, etc*; and to extend the facilitiesof bank accommodation ina more liberal manner than has hitherto been done in this city. Hundreds of families, it is said, have already possessed themselves of comfortable homesteads through itsaid. The new building was inaugurated a few days since, nn which occasiona large number of our substantial moueyed men were present, several of whom addressed the meeting. Mr. Mooney read the new propositions of the Directors (which will be found in our advertising enlumns),and commented upon eacharticle. He said that the credit bitherto affirded by tbe banksof California, was totally inadequate to the wants of the comniercial and industrial classes of the people. What merchant or manufacturer could start any enterprise on a thirty days’ credit and the apprehension of steamer day? They had the finest country that the sun shone npon, yielding the finest white wheat, finest wool, finest vegetables, fnest wines, and the earth plethoric witb gold, silver, quicksilyer and other metals, and yet thonsands of persons wero out of eimployment, and cryiug aloud for work, ‘This, he thought, arose from the want of liberal banking aud longer credits. The Building and Loau Society had resolved on exteuding accommodatiou to manufacturers, shipping aud general trade, not for thirty days, but for thirty weeks. His remarks were received with bearty cheers. ; C. E. Groves, architect, Nn. 315 Montgomery street, between Pine and California, room 14 (up stairs), can be consnlted at all times in refereuce to plans, estimates, specifications and detail drawings, lor ull kinds of buildings.
