-_ The Rining and Scientitic Press. 287 occurred before. [\Ve sliould be pleased to add ome spectinens of this rare miaeral to our eabinet.—Eps. Press.] About a qnarter of a mile to the north of the Oriental mine is the Burke sulphor bank, upon which Mr. B. has been at work for some time, and from which has been taken ont quite a quantity of native sulphur. There are numerous other curioas mnttcrs of geologic! and mineralogical interest ol which { would lke to speak, but I fenr my letter is alrendy qnite too long, and I defer anything farther till nnother time. Mixer, April 25, 1866. ——= Srerer or Macic.—Robert Hondon conCludes fiis memories with a chapter of Arab miracles, which ho expliined, The Aisgsnona eat powdered glass. Wondon powdered some for himself aid nte it, and he avers that his anjetite fur slianer was improved by the saine. Whey walk on red hot iron with bare feet, and pass their tongues over white-hot plates of iron, eof. Sementrici discovered that by rubbing into the »kin a solution of alum evaporated to a spongy state, it was rendered insengible to the action ol red-hot ition, He rubbed himself wita sonp, atul found that even tho haic dil not harn. Ve rahbed the alum into his tonzue, and lapped the glowing metalic surface without prin. Houdon himself then tried passing lis hanes, slightly dampened, through a stream of mefted iron, and found, ns others hive dine, that it left no sear on hiin. An Kaglish conjurer used to thrust a sword through his hody, shave a knife up either nostril to the handlo, and thns spitted, sing a song. Tfondon boneht the secret of the invulnerahle, and now divulyes it. ‘The performer was very thin. With a waist-belt he strapped his tender paunch tight down npun the vertebral col mo, enhatituted vn card-board stomach for the compressed part, covered nll with fle-h-colored tights ; hetween the true and false abdomen he fastened a senbbard. covcred the aperatares on the sides with rosettes, placed n sponse filled red liqnid in the seabbard, and there thrust his gvord, which came ont covered with bogns blood, of course. ‘The pug-nosed mountebank enjoyed a physical canfurmation whieh perinitted the delicate and frightful performance. Tue Amertcanxn Fuac.—The facts as to the origin of the Amerienn Flag, are simply these : A otmber of figs had been used previous to the Dechwration of Independence, none of which conld he called national, On the 4th of June, 1777, Congress orderat “that the flag of the thirteen united States he thirteen stripes, alternate red aud white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” The idea is supposed 10 hnve been suggested by John Adams, who was then chairman of the board of war; and it is helieved that he took the idea from the arms of the Wasningion family, the shield of which represents a white field traversed by two red bars, with three spur rowels or stars in the upper portion. The resolution of June 14th was not male pnbtie until Seitember 8d, 1777, and the stars and stripes were first displnyen conspicuously at the surrender of Burgoyne, in October of the same year. No attempt was maile to alter the flax nnti! 1794, when it was resolved by Congress that there should be fifteen stripes and fifteen stars init. The adiition of a stacand a stripe for cach new State wis found lo be exceedingly inconyenient, as it would soon enlurge the flng to rilicutous proportions. In 1817, Captain Reid, of the navy, who lind commanded the fimous privateer General Armstrong, suggested that the thirteen stripes be retained in compnemoration of the thirteen original colonies, and that a new star be added to the cluster in the union on the Fourth of July next sueceediny the admission of any new State. The stizzestion was adopted by Congress, and on April 4, 1818, hecame a law. The first flag under this law was made hy the wife of Captain Reid. This lady dicd in Baltimore, Md., nbont the year 1857. Tur Mestic Turer.—'hree forks to Jupiter’s thunderbalt : three prangs to Neptune's trident; three heads to Cetherns; three legs to the tripod or stool on whieh the Pythian [priestess vaticinated; three names to the sun— Sol, Apollo, Liberi; three also to the moon— Hecate, Dinna and Luna; three ablations nt sacrifices ; three bows on approaching royalty ; Ohee, twice, thrice, and away, say the boys; and three balls are the ominous emblem of pawnbrokers. Var Memory or a Motner.— When temptation appears, and we are almost persuaded to do wrong, how often a mother's word of warning will call to mind vows that are rarely broken. Yes, the memory of a mother has save many a poor wretch from. going astray. Tall grass mny be growing over the hallowed spot where all her earthly remains repose ; the dyiny leaves of autumn may be whirled over it, or the white mantle of winter may cover it from sight; yet the spirit of her, when he walks in the right path, appears, and -gently, softly, mournfally calls to him when wandering off into the ways of error. We must pass through this world to unlock the mysteries of the next; and it is only in the. noxt what we can find a key to unlock the mysteries of this, ips GH.
