ae Ss Che Rining anil Scientific Press, — es —_ Tug Greesuogx Copper Discovery.—Tho late discovery of copper, by Mr. Thorp, near the junetion of Greeahorn creek with Bear river, is ottracting considerablo ntteution. We took oecasion during our trip, last week, into Placer and Nevada counties, to pay a sbort visit to this mitio. We foand tho brothers Thorp, and their portucr Mr. Smith, busily engaged in sinking a shaft at the original point of discovery. ‘Tho shaft had “been earried down somo sixtoen fect, and from it had been raised some fiftecn tons of ore. ‘Tho yellow sulphurets were struck within two or threo feet of the surface, and havo continned down to the bottoin of the shaft, leaving n distinct wall of good fooking ore all the wny down on the gouth side; but considerably broken up upoa the north side of the shaft. Much work will yet liavo to bo done npon this mine to fully develop its value; although so fur as opened the develupnients sro exevedingly fluttering. Yellow snlpharets are fonnd slong the line of tle outcrop for the distance ofa mile or more, and extension claims hove been taken up for several miles. Tho vein is inelosed ia a heavy iutrasivo belt of serpentine —silicate of mngnesia— which ean be traced for many miles neross the eountry north and south, haying On ap-. parent breadth of about half or three-quarters of n mile, and gradually changing on the east und west to chloritic, and argillaceous nnd silicious slates. Active operations nre in pregress for the development of tho mine, nnd fifty or a hundred tons of ore will soon be delivered.in this city, when it will be sampled ond urranged, from the results of which we shall probably be nble to speak more particu. larly with regard to the value of tbe mine. Tae AGtxa Inox Wonss.—This new foun dry and mnehino works estnblishment lit its fires fur the first timo on ‘Thursday last, and tarned ont qaite a niee lot of enstings. Tbe company is composed of several of our most enterprising meebanics, who lave hitherto been eounected in varivus eapncities with differeat foundry establislnments in the city. ‘There was quite n gutleriug of the friends of the new firm on tho occasion, uud the hand of fellowship was niost eordiully extended by their fellow inechanies. May the fullest meusure of sue. cess attend thein in their new enterprise. sm ee Worps ror Mixers.—The Gold Hill Datly Ners, Nevala—a medium of good authority— saith thns: The Misixa ann Somstivie Paras is a weekly Journal, pub: Hshed in San Franeisco, which ls cutiiled to thy subserdte Mon patrounge of every pruclical miner in Nevadi, wad evory person Inleresiel an Nevada or Califuroia mining operations. lt isa well gidten np sixteen-page quarto: and Its reading woul) lend vastly to ie partientar ‘post ing*® atl genorno! collghtenmen) of our sort of working folks. A NEW ARTICLE OF TAGS FOR GROCEKs’ USE. New Mining Laws of California and Nevada, We have just issued, in cbeap editioa, the new laws relnting to mining and corporations in Cali fornia and Nevnda, passod in 1865-6. Some of these taws are of the highest importance to parties interested in the matter of locating and holding claims, and prospecting mines, in these States. Copies sent by mail. Price, 25 cents. Address, Dewey & Co., Patent Agents. San Francisco, May 1st, 1866. Jndicious Resolutions, Srveral ol our most substantial and judiciously managed mining corporations have passed resolutions, since the approval of the new assessment law, requiring all notice of assessineuts and sales to be published in. the Minixe anp Sorextiric Press, the cnly thorough (daily or weekly) mining joarnal on this coast. Our efforts to concentrate all mining advertisements in one paper, for the economieal conveaience of shareholders and assessinent piyers, are meeting with decided sueeess.,. Those who believe in supporting tbe mining cause, should bear our paper in miad, and briny up this subjeet ut the next trustee or sharehulders’ meeting. Sun Francisco, April 7tb, 1866. Look Out for Mlegal Advertising! All assessments of corporations levied on, or subsequent to, March 26th, are governed by the new law approved on that day. We notice that some of our importnnt mining companies are advertising their assessments illegally ia the daily aad weekly press of this State. As the new law is more liberal in its provisioas for, advertising thnn tbe Act of 1864, these comPanies have yet time to retrace their steps aud begin anew aad rigbt. We speak of the matter for tbe beaefit of all concerned. We have Prepared a set of correct blank furms for advertisiag aszessmeats, which we furnish free on application at onr office, together with rnles for advertising and copies of tbe new law. A Pretry Custom.—One of the prettiest of Christmas custoins is the Norgvegian practice af giving on Christmas day a dinner to the birds. On Christmas morning, every gable,’ gateway and barn-door, is deeornted with a shinf ol corn fixed on the top of a long pole, wherefrom it is intended that the birds shalt make their Cliristmas dinner. Even the peas-'! ants will contrive to have a bandful set by for this purpose ; and what the birds do not eat on Christmas day remains for them to fimsh at their leisure through the winter.
