The Mining and Sricutific Lress, B45
Tar Noatm Star Mrxe, Gnasas Vattey.—
Segotiations for the sale of this voluahle
gino have for some timo heen pending heween the owners of the mine and a party of
jan Francisco capitalists, represented by SVm.
jd. V. Crovise, Esq. The snm of $400,000
g snid to ho the nniount whicli is to he paid.
}{t wos oxpected thot the negotiation woold
nave heen concluded last week ; hnt somo misJinderstooding hoving orisen hetween the parnies, With reference to the contract, it wos
Helayed fora few days for adjostment. The
smatters of difference having heen referred to a
-hird party, havo heen adjusted ina monoer
tisfactory to all concerned, ond the negotiativo will probnhly he completed the coming
eek. The North Star is ono ol tho oldest
jis well ns ove of the mest valuahle mines in
he State, and in the hands of tho new comany cannot fail to prove a most valoable
mine, even ot the high figure nomed.
Personat.—Wo had the pleasure, a few days
ince, of receiving a cell from Mr. Chas. W.
Harker, of Austin, Reeso River, who left on
he steaurer of the 28th, for New York. Mr.
I. goes Mast for the purpose of endeavoring
© enlist capitalists in some mines iu which
fhe is interested. Mr. H.hnos somo very fine
ipocimens of ore with him, some of which, from
the Dacotah mine on Lander Hill, neor .AnsLin, showed cousiderahle native silver, a thing
very onusnal in Reese River ores. Ile speaks
very highly of the future of Recse River; although he fully egrees with some of our correspondents who hold that too much money has
heen spent there in huildiog mills, and too
little in developing the mines. A mill upon
an undeveloped mine is of hot little voloe.

A New Rock Daritiino Macaine.—A new
power drill has lately been put in operation ina
Western Railroad, through the Hoosac Mountain.
Ata late exhibition of the capacity of thie machine, made before some of the members of ths
Legislature of that state, it appears that with o
horizontal machine, ot 30 pounds pressure, a hole
19 inches in diameter was drilled 154 inches in
74 minutes; on the verticnl machine, 154 inches
in 74 minates; on the horizontal again, 294 inches
in 12 minutes. The rock used was franite taken
from Rollstoae Hill in Fitchburg; the drill striking 200 times in a minute, and ndvnneing one
inch every cighteen strokes. The hottom of the drill
is nearly in form ofnoletter X. It is said that Rollstone granite is harder thon the stone of Hoosnc
Mountain. 4
Heavy Biastixo Operations.—The heaviest
blast ever discharged on the Pucific Const, wae
let off in the hydranlic claim of the American Co. on Manzanita Hill, Nevada, a few
days since. The Nevada Gazelle, in epeaking
of it, exys that a tunnel was run into the hill
nivety feet, and across-cut of* sixty feet was
run at the end. ‘This cut was closely packed
with 510 kegs of powder, each keg having its
hend taken out. The tunnel was then cloeely
tamped. ‘The entire hill, 150 feet in depth,
200 in width and almost 300 feet back from
the front, was lifted several feet. in the air and
completely broken up, ready for bydroulicing.
The cost of running the tunnel, powder, ete.
was about $3,000. .
Minino Macninery.-—-The United States
Mining Journal has an article on miaing machinery, in which it says:Io regard to mining machinery there are a
few things that ought, hy this time, to he
among the settled convictions in the head of
every mining engineer, among which we might
mention: First, that a machine which has not
had ut home the hardest kind of a test of its
powere of endurance is not a safe investment
to send ahroad to miaes. Second, a machine
that requires to be driven nt a very high rate
of speed, especially for either crushing or pulverizing ore, is and must be an unenduring nnd
unprolitable mochiae. It cannot be durable at
hard work, and if taken out to mines, will only
goto swell the heap of rubhish accumulated
there to the dismay and disgust of mining .
companies. Third,a machine that professes
to comhine in one series all the processes from
the ctnshing the rock to the washing of the
slimes will invariably prove npsatisfactory.

The Gazeile appears to think the above estimote is not overstnted. The item of cement

Eartnquagce.—Quite o severe shock of an
earthquake was felt in this city and viciaity,
phout twenty minutes hefore 4 o'clock on Monday morning. We notice that the Chamher of
Commerce, in the pohlished ahstract of the
ptoceedings of their oonual meeting, have
placed upon record, asa fact, that the severe
eprthqnake of the 8th nf Octoher last did aot
eeriously injure any huilding in this city which .
wus coastructed of good materinls, with proper
fonndutions.
Gotn Yrero in AvstRaLia.—N ot withstanding on extraordinary drought, ond consequent
seurcity of water for mining purposes, the productiveness of the Australian gold fields does
bot appear to have heen checked. The reports
from many of the compaaies show but little
falling off. The Custom House returns of the
exporte of gold since the beginning of this
year, give 1,648,693 ounces. ‘ho quantity
exported last year was 1,725,000 ounces.
Hevstox, Hastings & Co.—This firm hnve
doubtless greater facilities than ony other clothing
house on the Pacific const, and seem determined
to place themsclves still further in the advance,
and surpass all provious efforts to please the fashionable public. They have now in process of
manufacture by their New York house, under the
direction of Mr. Heuston, probably the largest,
finest nnd most stylish assortment of goods ever
