Mining Summary.
CALIFORNIA.
Alpine County— , :
The Alpine Ifiner (late Monitor Gazeite,)
says: So many claims are now being worked
hereabouts, that hardly an hour passes that we
do not have fine ore, rich rock, splendid specimens, ete., presented for our admiratiou and
dnspection...The drift running for the second
chimney in the Morning Star, is now 180 feet
from the point where the ledge was first strack,
and has only ahout seventy feet more to run.
..-The Pioneer niill is working over the tailings which accumulated from the run last year
of IXL, Bnekeye and Wild Yankee. We
learn that the saving in quicksilver amounts to
about ten dollars per ton. . .Good rock is now .
coming out.of the Carson lode, eituated at the
lower end of town, and supposed to he an extension of the Little Monster lode. Everything indicates a permanent vein of first-class
ore..The work of catting across the lode by
the American Company, is progressing finely,
the eut being in about twelve feet. Several
strata of fine looking ore have been discovered.
..In the George Law, two shifts are pushed
ahead the work night and day, and having
picking roek ” they are getting underground
and toward the ledge very rapidly. ‘They are
now in over 240 feet.. .'The Good. Hope Gold
-and Silver Mining Company has, nnder the enabling act of 1864, removed its office from San
Francisco to Markleeville..The Mountain
Company No. 1, continue to push work, and
now have their tnnnel in over eight hundred
feet. The new fnrnace for ventilating isn
perfeet success..Buckeye, No. 1, has heen
leased to an Eastern company for six years;
the Buckeye. company to receive thirty per
cent. of the net proceeds..Buckeye, No. 2,
is husily engaged in timbering and preparing a
dump for ore..:The Silver Mountain company are running alongside their ledge, which
will be cut after going twenty-five feet further.
.. Work will soon be resumed by the Lady
Frovklin company, on the same lode of the
Buckeye, No. 2..The Pittshurgi company
are driving their work in good style.. Work
is temporarily suspeuded on the Rippon comer
Calaveras County-The Chronicle of Jnne 2d says: We learn
that two of the richest quartz leads ever struck
in this county were discovered at ‘Railroad
Flat one day last week. We have not heard
the particulars in regard to the width, etc., but
our informant tells us that the surface rock is
perfectly “lousy ” with gold. Messrs. Post
and Parks are the fortunnte locntors..We
learn that Mr. Depew, who owns the fine mill
in Spring Gulch, which he erected for the purpose of crushing the dirt from his tunnel
claim, has procared the machinery necessary
for qnartz crushing, and is now prepared to do
eustom work. We understand he has already
taken a contract to crush one thousand tons of
rock for Lamphear & Co.
Fresno County—
The Mariposa Gazette of June 2d says: We
have been shown some heautiful specimens of
pure native copper, taken from the Bachman
vein in Fresno county, at a depth of one hundred nnd fifty feet. It is found in thin layers,
imbedded in the ore. Similar specimens have
recently heen found in the Washington vein in
the same county, near Bachman..Vhe New
Idria Quicksilver mine is now producing five
hnndred flasks (thirty-eight thousand two hundred and fifty pounds) of quicksitver per month.
This metal 1s all hauled to San Jose hy teams,
a distance of ahont one hundred and thirty
miles.
Mariposa County-The Gazette says: A rich specimen of gold
bearing quartz from Snow & Co’s vein, has
heen presented ns. The vein is located near
Sebastopol.. Correspondent same at Buchanan Hollow, says: This moruing two
wagons left here for the San Joaquin, with
four tons of smelted copper. ‘The point on
the river where they ship the ore and lund the
goods is only about thirty miles froin here.
Steamers of seventy and eighty tons hurden
can run up there regularly nt this season, acd
hoats of lighter draft can maké the trip at any
season.. To-day, I visited the Buchanan
vein, in company with Mr. Haskell, one of the
proprietors.. .'The furnace is capable of smelting abont twenty tons of ore per day. ‘The
vein, or veins, for there are several of thein
rnnning parallel with each other, appear to be
all converging to 2 common center, and it is
thought that they will all unite in one vein.
‘Tbe ore changes, as the depth increases, from
carbonates to sulphurets, and the latter will
probably he the character of the vein at the
depth of 150 or 200 feet. ’
Monterey County—
A marhle quarry has reeently heen discoyered near Carmelo, and preparations are making
to work it.
Nevada County—
The Wational has these items: Fhe Kennebec cnmpany, Birchville, cleaned up after fifteen days run, $3,315..A ledge, supposed .
to he a very rich one, was struck by Tom
Cloonan, on Daisy Hill, last Saturday. The
ledge is eighteen iuches thick, at a depth of
eight feet. Free gold and sulphurets in ahundance can be seen in the rock. It prospects
at the rate of one hnndred and fifty dollars to
the ton. Quite an excitement exists in conse.
quence of this discovery...Two hundred .
nore dwellings could be let in less than a
week's time, if they were only to he had..
Brown & Brother, near You Bet, are said to
be making three hundred dollars a day with
their mill, crushing hlue cement.
From the Gazette we gather the following:
The work of putting up the machinery for the
hoisting and pumping works oo the Barrington
mine is progressing rapidly. ‘The engine will
probably be ready to start on Tuesday or
Wednesday next..A miners’ meeting had
been called at You Bet, to take into consideration the propriety of action in regard to the
mineral lands in connection with the railroad
grant..We understand their plan is to
make out a large number of affidavits, showing .
that the entire township of Little York is
mineral land, and file these affidavits with the
Register of the Land Office in Marysville..
Tbere has never been a time within the past
ten years when the general prospeets of this
eountry were more flattering than at present
..Tbe yield of the placer mines, though
less than in early days, is considerably in excess of what it was three or four years ago,
while the yield of the quartz mines has been
steadily increasing, and this increase bids fair
to be permanent..The Hagle company, organized at Hartlord, Connecticut, for mining
purposes, and incorporated under a special act
of the Legislature of that State, is uow commencing operations in Nevada county. The
California claim, owned by the company, is now
being opened. Steam hoisting and pumping
works of the most approved churacter are
being erected.. .'The owners of the Deadwood
niiue, near the Oriental mill, have been engaged for some weeks in erectiug works for
hoisting and pumping. ‘lhese are nearly completed, and tbey will commence operations
some time this week.. .John Yonng has completed arrangements for the erection of a
10-stamp quartz till on his ledge, near Eureka.
The ledge is two feet in width, and rock
enongh has been taken out and in sight to pay
for the mill..The Grass Valley Union has
just paid a visit to the Allison Ranch mine,
and says the company are working at n depth
of four hundred and seventy-five feet, incline.
We were shown one thousand ounces of amal-.
gam, the result of four days run of the hatteries. ‘he amalgam is valued at seven dollars
and a half nn ounce, making the nice little sum
of seven thousand five hundred dollars for four
days rnn.
Eixeetstor‘—The Transcript says the 1st of
July will be carly enough for prospectors to go
to this district. During the late snow storm,
about five feet of snow was ndded to that
already on tbe ground at Summit City. Previous to the last storm some few spots in the
district were hare. In Meadow Lake City, a
short distance from the lake, the snow was
ahove the fences..Snme of June 34d, says:
‘The warm weather of the past week is rapidly
melting the snow at the Summit. The weather
dnring the day is almost as warm ns it is at
this place. Large parties of emigrants from
Nevada and this place are going into the district every dny..A Stock Board has been
organized at Meadow Lake..A correspondent of the Lyon county Sentinel, writing from
Meadow Lake, May 25th, says: The Ohio, in
Old Man Mountain, is said to be very rich in
free gold, also the Grant and Mohawk. The
Excelsior mine is the deepest in the district,
and shows rich in free gold one hundred and
thirty-five feet from the surface. ‘There arc, I
am inforined, about six hundred nnd seventy-five
locations made, and if only fifty of the number
are as rich as they represent all to be, it is un‘douhtedly a big thing, and this is zhe country.
Placer County—
The Herald says the cement mills at Bath
and Forest Hill are a decided success, gravel
is a decided success, and the renewed prosperity-of that portion of the county is fixed
beyond a peradventure..From the Good
Friday claim was taken the other day, three-.
fourths of a flour sack full of rock, which yielded $1,400..The Stars and Stripes says:
Some specimens of float rock. picked up on
Anthouy Flat, helow Neweastle, are exceedingly ricb in small, free gold. Parties are in
search of the ledge from which it eame.. We .
have heen presented witb a sample of rock
from the Polaud lead—tlocated about a mile
and a half southwest of town—which shows
considerable free gold. The ledge on which
the Poland company claim 1,600 feet, is about
three feet in width, and shows free gold iu
most of the surface rock. ‘lhe company have
gone to work to open their ledge.
San Joaquin County—
A correspondent of the Neynda Gazette
says Mr. L. Cook has discovered an oil spring
on Mokelumne river, in San Joaquin county,
near Amador and Calaveras. It exndes through
the pores of sott blue rock, and floats on the
water, presenting precisely the same appearance that kerosene oil does when poured upon
water. All who have seen it prononnee it real
petroleom. Mr. Cook expects to prospect it
thoroughly.
Santa Cruz County— .
The Sentinel says that the Petroleum company, in that place, is driving ahead in bue
style. Four new retorts nre uow at the landing, and they will shortly he delivered at the
works. ‘
Shasta County—
The Courier ot June 2d, has these items:
931 feet, and are in six feet on what appears
to be a lead thatis 26 feet wide iv the upper
tunuel, and assays $50 per ton We learn
that the Chicago have sent an agent below with
a quantity of the rock to show its wealtb, and
to buy a mill and machivery, if satisfactory
terms can he made The erection of the
flame from the Clear Creek ditch on to the di. vide, between’ Oregon aud Olney gulches, is
progressing, and will soon be eompleted...
Rector & Wright, whose discovery ou Ross’
Gulch, on the cast side of the river, we noticed
last week, are working with the most flattering
Steady work is being done on
the Bunker Hill claim, with fair rempneration
for capital and labor invested, but of late no
rich pockets have been struck Accounts
continue to eome from South Fork district of
a natore eqnally flattering and startling with
those of the first discovery The Chinese
have been admitted into the Spring Creek district, and large nombers are working there
upon ground that pays two dollars per day
Correspondence of same from Whiskytown says: ‘he Pitchpine Co., are running
a tunnel on their ledge. “Phere is a company
at work on the head of Mule Canyou on a
quartz lode. The rock is decomposed...
Williams & Co. have completed their aqueduct, and it works splendidly. ‘This conipauy,
under instructions trom Messrs. Hallidie &
Co., of San Francisco, have made a wire cable
and suspended to it an irou pipe, seven inches
in diameter, conveying the waters of Brandy
Creek to their mine on Sawmill Flat...
Nate Farrington took his mill dam out last
winter, and has formed a company to work the
ground, which they suppose is rich. 1 have
heard of n claim on it being sold as high as
$500.
Sierra County—
Goodyear’s Bar correspondence of the Messenger says the miners were anxiously wniting
for the completion of the Water Vo’s flume and
dain. Meauwhile, work was suspended.
Siskiyou County—
The Yreka Union of June 2d,says: Henry
Wricht, of Oro Fino, took out $8,000 in six
weeks at that place.
Tulare County—
The Visalia Delta’s Havilah correspondent
says: Mining still goes on briskly, and all the
inills whieh are working, with one exception,
are paying well. The Pi Ute district grows iu
importance every day, and will doubtless prove
exceedingly rich. New and rich lodes of copper, copper and gold, nnd copper and silver,
are being brought to light, and some of the
rock is so rich in these metals as to be mnileable.
Yuba County—
The Marysville Appeal has these items:
Specimens of rich rock from femplar No. 2,
were hrought down from Indiana ranch yesterday. Wesawa small piece of rock; perhaps four ounces in weight, which, after heing
pulverized, showed nbout ten or twelve cents
in gold..A small number of shares in the
Pennsylvania company changed hands yesterday at $10 per share. The mill will begin
erushing to-morrow on the new rock nnd run
ten days before cleaning up..A year ago
shares in the Jefferson mine, at Brown’s Valley, could have heen bought for $5. . One gentleman owning 100 feet offered the lot at
$1,000. This stock is now paying $10 per
share per month, or $1,000, and the stock is
now held at $300 per foot. The Pennsylvania
stock has gone through similar mutations. It
was sold a year and a half ago at $40 per foot.
It then receded to $2 and $3 per foot. Onc
gentleman gave away about 150 feet. To day
$30 and $35 per foot is offered forit, and uo
sellers. It is worth $100 or uothing. . Wi hout particular reference to the Brown's Valley
ledges. we predict that in less than two years
the foothills of Yuba county will become as
celebrated for paying quartz ledges as those of
Nevada county. The county above Brown's
Vniley, is interlarded with hundreds of ledges,
some of theni seratched over, and others untouched. We know some of them are rich,
and believe thot theirdevelopment will prove
tbem valuable. There is one ledge we have
in particular view, which ought not to lie idle
for want of capital. A shaft has heen sunk
on this ledge seventeen feet deep, and several
tous of quartz crushed, which paid $20 in gold
L
The Kellinger are in with their lower tunnel . mine, Gold Hill, Joha Blight, was killed by
and $20 in silver. If this ledge was in the
vicinity of Virginia Cityor Gold Hill, it would
be at once pounced upon by speculators, aod
stock held at an enormous figure.
NEVADA.
‘Washoe— ;
The Carson Appeal says Mr. Ash, who for
some time past bas been engaged in prospecting some quartz leads in the hills west of this
city, got a return on ‘I'uesday from one hon-:
dred pounds of quartz which he had worked at
the Merrimac mill. The resalt shows an assay
of $20.63 per ton. Dr. Gabbs had some rock
subinitted to a like process, and gets a return
of $14 per ton..At the North Overman
falling into the shaft, 430 leet deep.. Extensive improvemeuts are heing made at the
Rhode Island mill.
Reese River—
From the Reveille we gather the following :
E. 8. Davis and Russell Scott, while taking
a walk over the hills in North Twin River
district, found, cropping above the gronnd, over
which perhaps 500 men had passed, n huge
ledge, ten feet thick, of richest silver-hearing
quartz, which they located under the name of
“ Canada.” We saw the assay, made to-day by
J.5.Cnrrie, which shows the splendid figures
of $5,705.14 per ton. Same paper gives fore
ther partienlars in the next day’s issue, con:
firmatory of the ahove; and adds: Vhe same
parties had previously discovered and located
in the vicinity three ledges, which they named
tbe Flora Temple, Potosi, and Enterprise. ‘The
first named is ahont 150 feet east of the Buekeye mine, and is five feet thick, regular and
well defined. ‘The Potosi lies two hundred
feet west of the Canada, and has a vein seven
feet thick. The Enterprise lies on the same
side of Summit Canon as the Canada, and half
aimile west of it. Phe ledge is apparently
twelve feet thick, but its walls are undeveloped.
..In the Confidence, located by same parties:
in the South ‘Pwin River district, and which is
believed, from its croppings, to be twenty feet
thick, the ore obtained from the surface
yielded hy assay $113 per tou; but later developments in the croppings, which have heen
penetrated to the depth of seven feet. exhibit
greatly superior ore, in which myriad flecks of —
native silver are easily discernible hy the eye.
..In the Old Colony mine, about ten days
ago, at the depth of 270 feet, the ledge suddenly widened to the handsome proportiuns of
eighteen inches, displaying a mass of finegrained, dark sulphuret ore, interspersed with
occasional delicate tints of ruby. ‘The gangne
is pure quartz, holding largely silver, iron, sulphor and antimony..T'wo bars of bullion
ohtained from chloride ore of the Roanoke
mine, were valued at $2,017 41, and were the
product of six and a half tons of ore, which
yielded at the rnte of over $310 perton..
The Nye county News has these items: The
Sucecor mill, which has been ronning for some
-time past, closed down a few days since, in
order to give the mibers an opportunity to get
ahead with ore.. We are infornied thnt the
fomous Buckeye claim, of Nort Twin River
district, has been sold to the Sterling Mill
company, whose fine large mill was erected nt
Kingston, Bunker Hill District, the past
season..The Pleaides hoys struck it richer
than ever on Thursday last, while working in
their mine, and are now getting out ore which
it is caleulated will pay $1,200 to the ton..
The Franklin has nbout seventy-five tons out.
..The Storm King about ten..The Atlantie and Pacific company will next week have a
large force at work.
Humboldt County—
The Register of May 19th has these items:
During two weeks past several parties have
been making discovery, or re-location, rather,
of very promising auriferous quartz veins in the
range which terminates, some thirty miles
down the valley,in ‘Table Mountnin..The
Ruby Silver company, owning in Pine Forest
District, thirty miles above Black Rock, has an
excellent ledge. The entire ledge is infused
with ore, which works, without assorting thirty
dollars in silver, nnd shows by assay fifty per
cent. copper. .. Two assays made this week of
quartz from the Silver Bullion claim show $140
and $198 per ton.. . The American Basin com
pany has been considerably encouraged this
week. Ata distance of 600 feet in, and nta
perpendicular depth of 350 feet below the
croppings, n small «‘ feeder” was struck, composed of the finest quality of Shebnore..
A small lot of quartz from the Volunteer was
worked this week at Holt’smill. It turned out
n good-sized brick of ernde bullion, in which
gold shows plentifully.
Black Rock—
The Chico Courant says these mines are increasing in richness as they nre developed to a
greater depth, and considerable excitement
exists regarding them, indpeed by the reports
of their fahulons wealth. Assays have heen
made ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 per ton.
They are situated directly on the Chico and
Idaho stage ronte, about half way hetween
