Quartz Miving nEaR AuBuRN.—We have
been shown, hy Mr. George A. Treadwell, a
rough diagram of a mineral district situated at
Ophirville, three miles helow Avhurn, Placer
county, which presents eome very interestiog
features, and is indicative of a valuable tract
of mineral country. The diagram exhihits a
eeries of fourteen east and west lodes, crossed
at right angles hy six north and south lodes.
Theee lodes vary from two to four feet in thickness, and are from one hundred to five hundred
feet apart. Two of the east: and west veios
carry considerahle silver, and two others a
notahle quantity of copper. All the balance
containing of the precious metals, gold only.
These veins are found to he much the richest
at the points of crossing. The sulphurets are
said to assay from $1,000 to $3,000 to the ton,
when properly concentrated. A company has
been formed which proposes to cut all of these
veins hy a tunnel, running diagooally through
hoth series; all that have heen discovered,
twenty in numher, will he cut hy rnnning this
tunnel 4,500 feet, draining the lodes from
seventy to seven huodred feet in depth. Thie
project can scarcely fail to he a most profitable
one for hoth the projectors and the vein bolders.
There are three quartz mills already at work
upon rock which ie heing takeu from these
veins, as follows :
A steam mill running ten stamps, owned hy
Mr. Welty, and employs for amalgamatiug four
of Varney’s pane—recently started with flatterjog proepecte. <
A 5-stamp mill owned by Mr. Snohle, uses
blankets, but no pans. This mill nets about
$500 per week, saving the free gold only, and
runniog away a large amount of valuahle sulphurets.
A 7-stamp mill, driven by a 30-foot overshot water-wheel, is run hy Mr. Pugh. He
uses an arastra, for grinding his sulphurets;
but the yield is emal!, as he does not roast
them. He has no paus.
No value whatever has been placed upon
the sulphurets ohtained from these ledges.
Receut experiments, however, baving sbown
that they are very rich in -gold, arrangements
will soon he made for roasting them. Our informant, Mr. Treadwell, bas just organized a
company, which consists of Messrs. Daniel and
Moses Choate, of Ophirville, and eeveral parties in this city, who will proceed at once to
erect a fourth mill on two of the ahove veine,
known as the North Star and Lady Lincoln.
The company will put up a 10-stamp mill at
the start, to he increaeed in capacity as circumstances may warrant. They will also put
up a roasting furnace for desulphurizing the sulphurets. The mill will he run hy water-power,
which can be obtained from the Bear River
Ditch, at a cost of $30 per week, running night
and day.
THE FIRST BRICK ever made from bullion
taken out of the Gould & Curry mine, is still
preserved in the office of the company in Virginia City. It was taken out in 1860, is princigally of silver, and worth ahout $100. It is
about five inches long, three inches wide aud
three-fourths of an inch thick, aud its value,
as heing the first hrick from that noted mine,
is far more than its intrinsic worth as mere
hullion.
