L The Rlining and Scientific Press, 377 GEN. JAOKSON ON MANUFACTURES. Jaekson in 1824, is as true now ag it was on the day on whicb it was spoken, with the additional foren which the thonsunds of fertile acres of grain land spread oat in oar Californiu bruad valleys, and througbout. our Western prairies, must give it. Let thn capitalists of California rend it, and nct wisely in view of thn trath it cortains : “Take from our ogricultcre 600,000 mnn, Woinen and children, to be employed in manufactories, and you will at once givon homn inmarket for more breadstuffs than all Europn now gives a3. Wo hayn been too long sabject to the policy of British merchants. It is time we should beeome a little more Aimerieanized.” Wh havn onlimited water-power in Cnliforpia, as ebeap as ony in the world. We have an abundancn of thn ruw material for wool manufactnre, and soon shull be amply supplied with honie-grown cottun ; or at least with tbat which is grown on the Pucific Const. Let our capitalists bnild ap manufactories ond they will provide a market for our breadstufts, furnish opportunity for labor, nnd give a new iinpetus to industry, nnd the employment of capital generolly on tho Dueific Coast. For thn information of those who have thought bot little of tbese things, and who may be eurious to know what capital employed in mnnufnetares will do, we copy tlie following statement from tho proprietors of the San Francisco Woolen Mills, which have been ranning only seven years. ‘I'he disbursements hy the Missiun company have been ag follows : For Cuatiforala wool. From tbe conversation held before the association, nitro-glyceriue appears like gan cotton, fo have states of apparent inactivity, which are moved by spontaneous causes; lor preparations that resist a certain nmount of force applied nt ono time, may readily explode soon aflerwards !” Had this peculinr property of nitro-glycerine, whieh wns recognized when the oil was found only in the laboratory, been remembered and kept before tbe public after it became introdaced as a commercial article for blasting porposes, the late terrible disasters might never have oceurred. It would either bave been more carefully bandled. or it would not have been allowed to have found its way into public conveyances at all. Button to the amount of $144,111 was shipped from the Gold Hilt, Nevada, express office of Wells, Fargo & Co., duriug tbe week ending June 9th.
