little prospecting is being dane fur ifew lodes,
us the Jadians are troublesome, wid the miners
geurrally are contented with whut they have.
I dort rely uch ou their judgment of quartz,
as they are mostly from Culurady and the
sheep ruiches ol California; there ure, however, a few miners from Eemeralda,in Nevada,
who huve ld vitied experience in quartz, who
expres their satistuction with the prospects of
th: country. * * Swilling’s parity, nbunt sixty
strong, nud well arnid nud imornted, will start
on the 20th inetant for the White Moratains,

From the Journal of June Sth, we clip the
following items: We learn that the DuBois

Long’s Peak, have recently jut up a smelting

Four eords of average Bobtail ore, cleaned up

the result of their last week's ruu—worth in

out of the eap, and the ore now obtained is of
the first quality of iron. Preparations are now
making to take it out in large quantities and
have it crashed in one of the old water mills in
Missouri City.
The Register has these items: Hon. J.T.

Cannel Coal in the United States of Colombia.
Mr. May, an English engineer in the employ
of the Colombin goveruinent, S. A., iu his report published in the offieial jonrnnls of that
Republic on October 3st, 1865, gives un aeeount of the discovery in the province of Rio
Hacha, ol immeuso depusits of coal ‘of tbe
variety enlled eannel;” nnd proposes that n
ruilroud forty-two miles long, from the mivesto
the sea be eonstrocted, in order to make the
new discovery avnilnble. In the course of the
report, he givesu very eomplete deseriptiou of
this species of eonl, which we quote from the
London Colliery Guardian of Mareh 24th :
“Cannel coal is known in mineralogy asa
black inineral having usually a slight tinge of
grey; its texture is compact, and its fraetnre
even or conchoidal with large cavities; its Inster is resinous nnd glistening ; it is sufliciently
solid and hard to be cut and polished, and is
the least brittle vuriety of coal. Its specific
gravity varies from 1.23 to 1.27. It contains,
according to Kirwan, carbon 75.2, bitamen
21.68, hydrogen 21.6, nitrogen 13.7. It burns
without softening, with a largo bright flame of
short duration, leaving a sooty substance ; and
when the combustion is complete, there is an
earthy residue of at least three per cent. Its
heating power is the same aseok2. Its odor,
like that of jet, is not nonpleasant. When
placad on the fire, it often deerepitates and
breaks into angular fragments. It is found in
England at Wigan and Whitehaven, also at
Gilmeston, in Scotland; there is also said to
be a mine at Cape Breton, and a few others of
little impoitanee in the United States. It is
employed, like jet, for mnking inkholders, toys,
etc. Whien of fine quality it dors not soil the
fingers, und it ignites ond burus like a candle.
It iz used in Englnod and the United States
for fnel in the houses of wealthy peop‘e, either
alune or nixeil with ather coal, It is the hest
coal known for making gas, and would be universally employed for that purpose, and for the
extraction of kerosine, which it yields in
abundance, but for its seareity and high price.
It is peculiariy suitable for heating the boilers
of locomotives, and all other classes of steam
engines, on accouut of its burning witha free
flame. After engineers have done all they
can, and have exhausted their skill and ingenuity to perfeet the machinery of steamboats,
the substitution of canuel for the ordinary fuels
employed will give from twenty to twenty-five
per cent. more velocity to a vessel. ‘he weight
and quantity of eannel coal required to produce
a given effect are much less than when ordinary eoalis burned; and all the American
steamboats whenever high speed is required,
use this eoul either alone or mixed with other
eombustibles.”
Wuo Discoverep Go.p.—Cadmus is said
to be the first who discovered gold. Some
authors attribute its discovery to Thoas of
T'hraee; others to Mereury, son of Jupiter ;
others to Pisus, King of ltaly, who having left
his eountry, went to Egypt, where be was
ehosen king after the death of Mizraim, and
rece?ved the surname of God of Gold, on account of his diseovery. Others say that Maclis
or Ceveus, sop of Jupiter, or Sol, son of Oceanus,
was tho first who discovered gold. Lschyles
thinks that Promethers not only diseovered
gold but also other metals.
Tar anti-cholera disinfecting fluid used at
Naples, was said to be very effective. Its basis
was permanganate of potassium, and which is.
in fnet, ozone. Its introduction and general
appliance bas been the work of some British
residents, who procured a supply from London.
