Frou Sax Bersarpixo Couxty.—We arc
permitted to make the fullowing extract from
a private Ictter, dated Saa Beraardiao, Juaa
19th, 1866:
“There is not much valuablo Innd between
here and Los Angeles, the valley or region of
“El Monte” being the principal. ‘I'bis region
lies quite low, but is sandy, and once cleared
from the willows, with which it is inostly overfore produces finely—particulaily of corn.
t would produce cotton, uo doubt. This side
of I] Monte is tho lurge runch of Cocomungo,
consisting of three lcugucs of land. ‘Ihere is
on this ranch a largy vineyard aid orchard,
both of which could be extended indefiaitely,
if wanted, as the land is of a dry, gravelly aature, aud lays beautifatly for irrigation. Bat
what is tho nso to rutse fruit or make wise
when it costs all they ara worth to get them to
market. Sume day. when railroads pass through
this region, it will come out of the kinks aad
take its place in tho frout, as a wine, olive aud
orange producing country. ‘I'he valley of Saa
Bernardino appears about as large rs Napa,
from Sebustopul to Suscol, and preseats at this
time ouc mass of green. It ia nearly every
fuot of it susceptiblo of irrigation, and produces, of tiny in particular, immensely. A
man told me he wus mowing tho third crop,
and would surely cut the picce twica more this
season. fis hay wus alfulfa—and yet witb all
its grecn grass and shuity trevs, you are not
satisfied with the appearanco of things—as
io Nogarth’s pictures, tho animnl, the gross,
seems to predomiuato ; tho country lucks character, soul!”
A New Kixv or Fur.—The Clevelaad
(Ohio) Herald asserts that some of tho lake
steamhoats ure usiag fish for fuel! IJuge 60pound sturgeoas are thrown bead foremost iato
the furnaces, with a little wood. The oil
agsists the combustion of the wood ; aad tweuty
stargeons are said to bo qnite equal to a cord
of wood in the productioa of heat.
PernoLecm does aot seent to work well ag a
lubricator in a cotton mill. The Usion Mills
of Fatt River have just had 6,000 cases of cottoa goods throwu back on their baads damaged
by petroleum, used as a lubricator in their
works. The most careful washing and bleachjag has hitherto failed to remove the “ spottiag”
effect of the petroleum oa the colors.
Cow Mitker.—Wo saw Colvia's Americaa
Cow Milker tested this week upoa a cow on
tbe place of I. W. Kaox, Oaklaad. It proved
its efficiency for milkiag, whea properly applied
in good order. If it will stand tbe test of
timo a3 well, it will certaialy prove a valuable
as well as novel iastrumeat.,
Te THrD Heady's Improved Coacentrator

Wear a Suiur.—Children, whicb will yoa
do? Smilo and inake others happy, or be
crabhed aad aiako everybody around yoa miserable? Yoa caa tiva among beautiful flowers
and singing birds, or in tho niire surrouaded by
frogs and togs. ‘Tho amount of happiness you
cun prodacc is incaleulablo, if you will show a
sailing fuce, a kind heart, and speak plcasaat
words. Ontho other hand, by sour looks,
cross words, aud a fretful disposition, yoa caa
make hundreds uubappy almost heyoud eadurance. Which will you do? Wear a pleasaat .
countenance, let joy hcam in your cye aad love
glow on your forehasd. There is no joy so
great as that which springs from a kind act or
a pleasunt decd, and you may feel it ut nigbt
when you rest, aad at morning when you rise,
and through tho duy when about your daily
husiacss.
