60 The Mining and Scientific Press, Derr Mintne.—The Eureka mine, of Amador, which, we helieve, has, almost from its first opening, continued to he the deepest mine in California, is now down over 1,000 feet, and is still found to pay as well as at any point of lesser depth. ‘We believe the rale holds, thus far in California, almost without exception, that after any considerahle depth has heen attained, there is no depreciation in profit perceptihle— the imcreasing yield of the mine making up fully for the increased expense of working at a greater depth. This rule holds good, especially n Grass Valley. GeoLocy To se Porvnarizep.—lt is stated that Theodore 8. Fay, a writer known well to readers of twenty years ago, and who for nearly a quarter of a century has resided in Europe, is engaged upon the preparation of a series of text-hooks on geology, which promises to be in advance of anything hitherto known, and which will sweep all rivals from the field. Farmuina Prosrrcts.—fhe Stockton Jndependent says, during no winter, since we hecame acquainted with the San Joaquin Valley, have ) the prospects of the farmers been more auspicious than they are at present. Tur States of Connecticut, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota, have voted against negro suffrage. The people of Colorado ‘Territory algo made the same expréssion of sentiment in their late vote adopting a State Constitntion. Minina Sate.—One-half of the Shanghae quartz mine, near Yankee Hill, Tuolumne county, has been sold to a San Francisco party for $25,000. George Morgan and J. B. Douglass, of Columhia, were among the owners. Mownrana,—The Territory is without a Legislature, or the power to call one. An Enahling Act, by Congress, is the only way suggested to overcome the difficulty. OUE NEW YORK AGENCY. Mr. Geo. M.
