64 She Mining and Srientific Presa. HYDEAULIO MINING AT SUOKER FLAT. In copying a short paragraph, two weeks since, from the Marysville Appeal, in relation to the sale of portion of the interest in the Squaw Creek Hydraulic Mining Company, located at. Sucker Flat, Yuba connty, we were inndvertently led into an error. We are now enahled to give a correct report of that transaction. S. B. Clark sold his interest (four-fifths of the claim) in snid company to an association of Eastern capitalists for $170,000, of which snm $115,000 was paid in gold, on the 23d of Decemher last, at the Bank of Wells, Fargo & Co., in this city ; $55,000 was paid in currency in New York. ‘The remaining one-fifth of the mine is owned hy Col: A. F. Williams, who negotiated the sale of Mr. Clark’s interest, and hns further provided that the purchasers of thnt interest shall fornish a working capital of $30,000 in gold, to develop the mine, without any assessment upon his own interest until the $30,000 shall have heen fully expended. It is thought, however, that the mine can he successfully worked through an upper tnnnel, now nearly completed, nnd which will he nhle to furnish sufficient means to drive in the lower tuunel (partially constructed), so as to open the nine at the bottom or hed rock. The Squnw Creek mine is immediately ndjoining the celebrated Blue Gravel company’s ground, and supposed to he equally rich, if not richer, than . that celehrated mine. Both these mines are located on Sucker Flat, a few rods to the north of the road from Marysville, where it passes through Smartsville. The district comprises the most extensive aud best-paying hydroulic diggings in the State or the world. The most of the work hitherto done here has heen confined to what is called the “ upper hench,” which rests upon a thick hed of pipe clay, helow which, where the grovel has been reached, it is found mnch richer than ahove. There are some fifteen companies now at work there—the Blue Gravel company being the only one which has got well to work in the lower hench. The deposit of gravel is from 100 to 160 feet, deep, coutaining fine gold from top to hottom’ and by washing Inrge qunntities with compara: tively little expense, the net protit to the miner is large. We may instnnce the Blue Gravel company, which, in shout seventeen months, took out $405,000 ; of which amount they paid to their stockholders $310,000, requiring hut $93,000 as Working expenses. Their claim is very exteusive, and many years will he required } to work it out. The Squaw Oreek mine is equally extensive, aud not less than twenty yenrs will be required to exhaust it. The purchasers are amoug the wealthiest cnpitalists of Pennsylvania. Work by the new company has alrendy commenced, under the superintendence of Col. Williams who, we presume, will he continued in charge by his Eastern nssocintes. It is gratifying to note that the attention of Eastern cnpital is being called tothe worth of our deep gravel workings, as a source of permnnent and profitahle investment. Pusnry or Water.—The late heavy rnins have dispelled all appreheusions ‘of a draught among the formers, or any lack of water for mining purposes in the mountains. The quantity of rain in the interior has exceeded 20 inches—in this city nhout 153% hnve fallen. ‘These aniounts are ahout the usual proportions of water which fell in the iuterior and on the coast of California. Tur Hos.—The Iron Mountaiu of Missouri is said to he exactly in the geographical centre of the United States. It is an almost solid mass of speculor iron ore, rising from a level plain 260 feet. Its hase covers 500 acres. Vhe ore contains sixty-seven per cent. of iron. It may very appropriately be called the Hub of the Union. Gotp Yistp or OrReoon. — The Dalles Mountaineer gives tables, showing that the gold yield of Oregon is $6,450,000. The miners of Southern Idaho are not included. Mr. I. N. Hadson, is authorized to solicit subscrip. tions, advertising, etc., for the Mining ann Scienviric Psess, in San Francisco, and toreceipt tor the same. Money by Mam.—-Suhscribers and advertisers remitting uS money in less sums tban $50, can do so by mail at our risk, if they will register their letters; we will take no tisk on unregistered letters, or lettera by express. Remittances by express must be prepaid, Delays are Dangerons.—Inyentors « on the Paclfic Coast should bear in mind that by patronizing our Pateut Agency they can sign aii necessary papers tor securing pa. tents almost Immediately, thereby avoiding the tbree month's deiay requisite in transacting business through Eastern agencies.
