16 She Bining wid Srientific Dress, CONTRIBUTED FOR OUR CABINET. Under this heading we shail eontinue to mention and deserlbe, aeeording to merit, such specimens of ores, minerals, fossils, curiositles, ote, as may be presented, or forwarded tous ay mail or express, prepaid. Each articte ‘will be numbered and placed iu our cabinet, and recorded with the name of tho donor, and the clalm or location from whence it came. Curistian Anperson, of West Point, sends us a specimen which he supposes to he tin ore. The sample resembles very closely “ red hematite,” a valuable ore of iron. We shall test it thoroughly and report. Me. Scureiser, of Sacramento City, sends us a specimen from the Mountain Quartz Mine, El Dorado City. It was taken from a depth of 100 feet, and contains a large percentage of very fine looking sulphurets. Tue Ninerieta Anniversary of the independence of our conntry has come and gone. These anniversaries ever bring with them grand and interesting associations and reflections, calling forcibly to mind the great struggle in which our fathers and grandfathers were engaged, in the memorable contest which resulted in the separation of our country from its colonial dependence upon England. The great principles involved in that contest, and the indomitable perseverance and determination with which they were defended by a weak and scattered people against a great and powerful nation, have made that struggle one of the most memorable in the history of the world. Of these anniversaries, the one which we have jnst celebrated is especially to be remembered. It was the occasion of a double rejoicing: first, for the original acquisition of the Independence of our beloved country; and second, for the happy termination of the dreadful struggle which we have just passed, in which we have so triumphantly vindicated the same principles which were at stake when our forefathers fought for that acquisition. The weather on Wednesday was unexceptionable. The procession, the literary exercises of the day, and the magnificent display of fireworks in the evening, were creditahle to San Francisco _and to the occasion. : Crepir.—The article on our eleventh page, entitled “The New River (Trinity County) Mines,” should have heen credited to the Trinity Journal.
