Every hlocksmith or other person who has heen in the habit of using blacksmiths’ tongs, hns often felt the inconvenience of changing from onc instrament to another, ns is requisite in handling iron of different thicknesses. The object of the invention herewith illustrated is
to obviate that necessity, which purpose is accomplished hy mnking the tongs adjustable, so that the same instrument mny be used con———= stantly. ‘This is done hy constructing aratchet of: hooked teeth, as represented at C, on the part, B; and by a tooth, c, on the part, A, which locks into any tooth of the ratchet, according to tho size of the iron to be held. The two parts of the tougs can in a moment be separated when necessary ; and the construction is very plain and simple. ‘The finished engraving shows the tongs get to hold a small object ; and the dotted line shows them set wide open, to hold a large object. A patent was taken out for this invention on October 24, 1865, . by C. W. Le Count. of Norwalk, Cunn. John C. Graff, 225 Front street, New York city, is sole agent for the inventor, and is ready to furnish thein in any amount to the trade. ee Se Mining Review.—The semi-annual review on pages 21 and 22, is presented in this issue, in ndditinn to our usual aninunt of reading. We are indebted to the proprietor of the Mercantile Guzette and Prices Current forthe type and composition of the same. The Annual Report of the Golden Rule Mining Company. (eon tker 17, 1866.) To the Stockholders of the Golden Rule Minang Company of Tuolumne County: The annunl meeting was advertised for Jnne 10th, but no quorum being present an adjournment was advised for thirty days, when it is hoped a full quorum for business will he present. The report of the Secretary was submitted for the fiscal year of the company, ending June 30th, 1866, being the third year of our workings, since which time we lave run no tunnel 509 feet through solid rock, cutting four large quartz veins, upon one of which only we have dune any work. The tunnel gives a drainage eighty-three feet on the vein helow the surfnce. We have also run adrift north on the vein 300 feet; also sunk a shnft 7614 feet below the drift, being 150 feet from the surface. The vein is a taleose slate and quartz mixed, of from ten to six feet wide. The present prospects of the mine are good, and it is hoped thot the existing debts will he paid off during the coming year, and that the stockholders mny receive small dividends, besides paying for further improvements in hoisting machinery, etc. ‘. The present superintendent, Mr. A. 8. Phifer, to whose energy, perseverance and economy for the pnst three years the company is indebted for their success, is still with us. Our new w-ter mill, of fifteen stamps, since the 19th of March, has been running principally on waste rock, of which he had some 2000 tons; this rock having been rejected as too poor to work in our small, old 5-stamp mill. Our avernge from this class of rock has been about nine dollars per ton, including what rock we took from the new shnft in sinking. The average number of men employed during the yenr is thirteen. GEOLOGIOAL EXPLORATION OF SONORA, MEXICO, Messrs. Cummings and James Cherry passed through this city,a few dnys since, on their return to the East from a seven months’ tour in Sonorn, Mexico. These gentlemen were sent thither hy certain prominent politicians nnd capitalists, who represent “the power behind the throne” at Wnushington, and who feel an interest in the future of that portion of . Mexico. The ohject in view was to secure snch reliahle knowledge of its mineral and agriculturnl wealth nnd general features as would meet the desire for such knowledge among our people at the East. They had, also, other missions of less importance—to select and locate mineral and other lands under grants from the Government, and to examine into certain mining possessions for London capitalists, and to inquire more clearly into the merits and manneement of a number of the most noted mining enterprises of Southern Arizona and Northern Sonora. ‘Chey informed us that they met with n most unexpected degree of successin all their missions, notwitbstanding their explorations were necessarily carried on under many deprivations and in much danger from the unMuch of their time was necessarily spent heyond civilized habitntions, ond in the midst of the dreaded Apaches, ina region of country hitherto hut little explored; yet quite as much risk and uncertainty was experienced among hoth: Imperial and Liberal nrmed forces, as ‘among those dreaded savages. Tse Wence Quicxsitver Mine.—The annual meeting of the Welch Quicksilver Mining Company, situated at Mount Diahlo, wns held at Clayton, on Saturday, the 7th instant. Ahout 3,600 shares were represented, and the meeting resulted in the election of a new Board of Trnstees, and by a two-third vote it wasde cided to remove the office of the company to San Francisco. The office will hereafter be located at the corner of Clay and Battery streets. ‘I'he affsirs of this mine are in a good condition, Two shafts are being put down, one of which igs sunk near forty feet, and the other ahout sixty, both of which are yielding good pny ore. There is also a tunnel being run to strike the vein some 200 feet helow the eroppings. The tunnel is now in abnat 160 feet, with good evidence of close proximity to the lend. A statement by the Treasurer of the company was made, which showed that over $5,000 had been received from quicksilver taken from‘the mine since March Ist, A remark was made hy an English engineer upon this, showing that if tle mine was situated in Europe the stock would now be at par. * Assay Orrices.—The House Committee on Mines has reported a bill to estublish offices for the assay of gold and silver at Portland, Oregon, and Boise City, Idaho. It also repeals the act establishing a Branch Mint at Dalles City, Oregon. It will probably pass. Perrermint.—It appears from the returns of the Internal Revenue Department that $90,000 worth of essence of peppermint was manufactured in the State of Michigan during $3,608 oo: the year 1865.
