a The Mining and Scientific Press. A Noyes Setore.—In a private letter from Dr. Chas. Dorat, Suntu Anna, State of Satvador, Central America, he says; “1 wilt mentiou a curious case wf native surgery [ witnessed ashort time ago. The patieat had received a severe stab in the abdomen, from which protraded about half a yard of intestiae and a portion of omentum, the former having a tongitudinal slit about three inches long. On my arrival [ found an Indian medico had sewed “up the wounded gut «with the nippers ofa large ant. ‘The insect, which is very savage, wus taken by the body and its nae presented to the uuitcd lips of the wonnd, which it bit and hetd fust. ‘The operator then, by a pinch of the fingers, killed the ant, [nipping off its body and] leuving its head fixed to the gut. Another and another ant thus applicd, to ths putnber of a dozen or fifteen, affected this siogulur suture, ‘Ihe gut was then repluced, and, no iuflamination ensaing, the mun recovered speedily, ‘his curtous practice is suid to be uzust ia this purt of Central America.” A Warerras. of Two Tuovsaxp Feet.— The Democrat suys there isa fitll of water on the South Fork of the ‘Tuolumne, thut lays over the falls of Yo-Semite by seven hundred fvet. The fall ut the lutter place—at teust the perpeurlicular fall—ig stated, we believc, at fourteen handred fset, while this fall of water on the Tuolumns is given at two thousand feet. Dr. King and Mir. Gurdiner, under the direction of Prof. Whitney. the Stute Geologist, have becu exploring the sectiou of country wutered by the ‘Tuolumne river and branches, and inade ths discovery of this fall. ‘lhe gentlemen visited Sonora the other day, and altar reaiaining a day or two, returned to the falla, where they intend to maks a complete survey The country is deseribed as beantiful, and the vulley where the falls are situated eachanting. Sen. Awnotner “ Baxker” Miye.—The Downieville Messenyer gives a hrief description ofa mine aear that place, which weshould judge somewhat resembles the eelebratsd Banker inine, near Lincola : . The Chappai quartz claim, situated ahout one mile northerly trom Dowuieville, near the Monte Cristo trail, has been heretofore worked as a placer cluim, being in a taleose formation —which is much decomposed aear the gnriace. Wuter, with the help of the pick, has heretofore been quite safficient to fres enough of the gold to nuke it quite remunerative property to the owners. Recent developments have proved its continuity in depth, with a very rich eluss of auriterous ores. ‘Ihe ores now beiug quartied are so tich that the proprietors are sacking them tv be put away for safe keeping. Traveers and geologists litve beea at a loss to account for the origin of the Inssses of asplialte, sometimes of considerable size, touad floating ou the watur of the Dead Sea. Jaa psper recently presented to the Academy of Sciences by M. L. Lartet, “On the deposits of Bitumen in Judea, and on the Asphalte of the Dead Sea,” the author states his belief in the existence of a series of hot springs whieli rise through bitumiuous limestone aud bring up the asphalte. Tne curvature of the earth amounts to sevea inches per mile. A mun six feet high cannot bs seea from a distance of tea miles.
