A Mr. Ensley, » Cunadian, severnt years since, wus strack with the fact thut smoke, issuing from a vessel in which tar was beim boiled out of pitch pine, would burn. tte poudered over it, visited severul gas works, until his ideas be caine clearer und led him to construct a small retort lor experimentul purposes. I]is attcinpts to discover somo ieuns hy which the gus might be separated from the various other constituents of the wood were for a long tine iu vaiu, nid it was only alter seven years cuntinued study and reflection that his perseverance was rewarded by a solution of the problem. which enubled bim to obtain a patent Irom the United States and the Brilish Provinces, Mr. Ensley, however, lacked enterprise and tieans to curry the thing through. But he has recently found ina Mr. Moffut, a gentlemun weaithy enough and sufficiently coufident ol the success of the invention to give it a Snir trinl, and a large model has been set up at Mr Moffut's as a means for that purpose. It is eluimed that 4.500 feet of gas can be produced from half a cord of wood and a harrel of bones. But this is not the only saviuy. When these articles are consumed in accordance with Mr. Ensley’s directions, thero is no waste whatever, but simply transinutation into other commodities of uearly equal vulue, to which the was is superadded. ‘he wood, for iastance, yields not only gas, but charcoal, tar und turpentine. ‘The bones give a residunm of ivary blick, phosphorns and ainmonia of a superior qualily ; and the vegetahle substances the residuuin of other things which further scientific experiments will no doubt yet bring to light and find use for. In this manuer, the gus hecomes, ns it were, a mere incidental) leature, manulactured not only at a minimum expense, bat of an excellent kind. Atthe same time few things can be more siinple than the apparatus, or more easily worked. Amustso EExprriaents on Rats. — An amusing experiment on rats was recently perpetrated in a mercantile honscin Petersburg, Va. ‘I'wo of the animals had been trapped, and it was decided to try the effect of whiskey upon them. Forty drops were administere: to them by force, and the result awaited. They were placed in a deep, wide box, into whieh some graval had been thrown. A saucer of whiskey was placed therein. For a white all waa silent, each rat having eeated hintself in a corner, where le remained as niorose ag a rat could he. By and hy, however, the liquor begun to work. ‘Ile rats hegau to sinile and play with their tails, then to jump up and squrak ; and then to full down and roll over. Finally one of them found the saucer, and, with the peculiar curivsily attaching to the ruce, dipped his nose into it. WHedrank, and the noise of his drinking brought his mate to his side. 'l'hey drank as though they were really fond of the stuff, and, it is estimated, took wiore Jhan twice forty drops. And uow they gotglorious. ‘hey kissed each other. They revisited the sancer, a d got mad over it; and a rongh and tumble fight ensued, which lasted until bath were exhausted. hen they remained for a while, each with a paw to his nose, grinning at the other. Finally both fell asleep, and while they were gloriously nnconscious, a terrier was dropped hefore them, and the curtain falls. How tr Rains in Manitia.— Tiere are many places under the tropics, that is to say, near the equator, where the rains are heavy and almost incessant, and where four, and even six times the amonnt falls that falls here. Manilla, in the Philippine Istands, to the south-enetward of Asia, is exposed to very heavy ruins, so that the streets of the town are cither pools or rnnoing etreains of water. When this happens, the people there have to go tramping about with bare feet and legs all the day. Peter’s Pexce.—In former times, in Catholic eountrics, there was paid to the Pope by the pcople, on the festival of St. Peter, a sum of money, . regulated by luw, called Peter's Pence. Now the naine is given to voluntary contributions to his holiness. Sometimes these contributions are very large. That of 1860 was over two millions of dollars, MINING SHAREHOLDERS' DIRECTORY, (Complled for every Issue, frum adverilsemenis In the Szin0 asp Beigxtiric Peess and other Sau Franctsco Journals}.
