Deer Divixc. —The deepest recorded deseeut of uny submarine diver was inade in
ovember, 1866, at Brest, in efforts to reach
the sunken hall of the English ship Columbian.
Two descents were made, each of which reached
a depth of 196 feet. In the first instance
one of the air-pumps burst at that point, and
tho diver was immediately brought to the surface. ‘The diver came up safy and sound
Fresh pipes having been secured, the diver
on a eubsequent day again mado the descent.
Having reached the game depth os before,
having remained there for the spnee of nbout
eight orten iinutes, he gove the signal to
be hanled ap. The signal was immedintely
complied with, but before the necessnry time
ad expired for the apparatus to reach-the surface, tho diver, inclosed in his armor, wos seen
afloat upon the water at a short distance trom
the steamer from which the experimentors were
Working. He was immediately taken on board
in a very exhuusted state. He fainted twico,
mt hy the use of proper restorativos was
tendered quite comfortable jn about two hours.
From the time he reached 180 feet in depth,
the indicator showed a pregsnre o] six ntinospheree—ninety pounds per square ineh. Op
being takea ou board from the second trial, the
@rmor was fonnd to have been broken, so that
the water was forcing its way in and filling up
the legs of the nppuratus. Aside from that
accident, the experiinent proved conclusively
that no haman being conld stand a pressure of
Ninety pounds to the square inch for any considerable length of time. On the first uttenipt
the suhinurine lamp with which he was occompanied was crushed in by the pressare of the
water.
Mape Monxry Exoveu.—Elias Howe says
that le shall not apply for an extension of bis
Seving-machine puteat, which expires this
year, a3 he has alrendy made a million anda
half dollars on it, and thinks that is enough.
Mr. Howe is much more remarkable as a man,
who has got money enotgh, than as ano inventor.
A Leexy Finp.—The Idaho Index of July
I1th, snys that it is reported that several days
after the Indians made their onslaught on the
Chinamen near Summit Spring, and killed and
rohhed many, a traveler coming up the road
noticed a part of a sack of rice, Picking it up,
and emptying out the contents, he discovered
& packnge containing nine hundred dollars in
coin.
Greasy Ores 1n Arizona.—Of nothing hove
Our miners complained more than of greasy
ores {so culled). This greasiness coats the
quicksilver. and prevents amalgamation, ead,
of course, the gold floats away. This greasiness is usually, perhaps always, caused by thé
presence of Ssteutite or tale in some form. In
some furms this bears the name of soap-stone.
Every one knows its greasy character. Its
coniposition is silicia, magnesia and water. It
often contains (especially in Colorado) a small
ainount of earbouic acid. Meerchauin is also
a variety of tale. ‘Thus much for the coniposition of the mineral substance which causes the
trouble. Burning may not remove the difficulty, heeause this coinhbination will not be
materially changed by the action of fire. It
nlust be some snbstaice that will have a chemical action. Quicklme has been Jound in
Many instances to have the desired effect in
destroying the oily character, and hos been
extensively employed, and with the best of
success. In some cases other mineral substances will be found to be the cause of the
greasy character, and the ores must in such
cases be treated differently. Sometimes roasting the ores removes the difficulty—only praetice and experience cau conquer in every case,
Every different ore may require a different
treatment. Where the tale or miuerals occur
it will often be found necessary, even after
horoing, to use some other means, and so with
other combinations, while antimony ond arsenic
can only be got rid of by roasting.— Arizona

Tar Bouan Harp isa very simple iustrument, easily constructed, and produces very
pleasant music. ‘To make one, take tyo
strands of strong sewing silk, well waxed, a
single and double twist, fastened to four pegs,
one ineh high, on au inch board as long as the
width of your window. At ove end the pins
~ should have a thumblet similar to a violin
pin, to enable you to draw it taut. Place it in
a window, the sash resting on the pins, and
whtn the wiad blows you have such souads as
the angels love. One string will produce seyeral notes, changing as the wind is gentle or
forcible.

For three months of the lime 1 was unable to feed myself,

atthe Warm Springs, at San Luis Obispo, and three months
ata Hydropathle Institute In Stockion, and I have been
under the care of slx diferent physiclais. in the vain hope
olrellet. About four weeks ago I was induced by a persou
who had_been cured by it to try a bottle of RICHARD'S
RENEDY FOR RHEUMATISM, and in less than iwelve
hours I experienced great rejlef. In a few days I was
enabled to straighten out my arms, and I have beer getting
better and galning in strenzth and flesh ever since. [have
