The Mining and Scientific Press,
Tae Sprmormetp Miurary Musvew.—
The wuscnm at Springfield, Mass., is to be
munde a military storehouse containing articles vf great historical value. There will
be an almost cndless variety of guns—American and foreign, Federal and Confederate,
muzzleand hreech-loading. A valuable fcature will be specimeus of tho scores of
Drecch loalers which were presented to the
commission for examining such arms which
met in Springticldsome time ago; also photographsof cvery partof cach. Of course,
war relics will compriso a preminent part of
the collection. Blood-stained guns and
swords froin many a battle field will he
found there, with a large nomber of specimens of Soutbern guns, swords and pikes
which are so roughly finished as to show
that the Confcderates were too hard pressed
to stop for much ‘style’ in making them,
even if they had skilled workmen to do the
work in hetter shape. The museum will ho
enlarged as relics of various kinds are sent
among the old guns forwarded to the armory ; aud it cannot fail to become acollection of much interest and worth.
Owens’ Rrver Vauuey.-—This valley, from
all accouuts, is steadily growing in importanec. ‘The climate is remarkably healthy,
and the seil yields the various products with
astonishing prolificacy. Grapes grow finely,
and tohacco flourishes. During the past
seaspn several acres of sorghum were planted,
yielding fincly and producing syrup of a
good quality. ‘The cereals fourish amazingly,
especially wheat. There are already two
flouring mills in the valley, and a splendid
article of flouris manufacturod. Asa cattle
raising country it is unsurpassed. There
are several sawmills in the neighborhood,
and Inmber is cheap. Aschool has been
estahlished at one locality, which is attended
hy about thirty scholars. There are good
mines in tho neighhoring mountains,
To Crment Brass on Guass.—Puscher
uses a cement particnlarly adapted for fastening brass on glass lamps, which consists
in resin somp—made by hoiling three parts
of resin with one part of caustic soda and
five parts of water, which is mixed with
one-half its weight of plaster of paris, This
cement has great adhesive power and is not
permeahle hy petroleum; it sets firmly in
less than an hour, and.is a very slow conductor of heat. Zine-wbite, white-lead, or
precipitated chalk may he substituted for
plaster of paris, but the material will he
longer in bardening.
Tr is expected that the track of the Pacific Railroad coming West from the Missouri, will be laid to Evan’s Pass (the highest point to be passed between the two
oceans) by the first of January—next week.
The distance of that point from Omaha, the
western terminus, is 555 miles.
Orn Wetis.—Seven thousand nine hundred and thirty oil weils have heen sunk in
the United States since the year 1861, and
have yiclded a total product of about 11,640,679 barrels of crude petroleum.
Tue clock at Hampton Court Palace, England, which was set up in 1540, is said to
have becn the first elock made in England.
