VARNEWY’S
PATENT AMALGAMATOR
These Machines Stund Unrivalcd.
For rapldly pulverlzing and amalgamating ores, they
have noequal. No effort hag becn, or will be, spared to
Dave them constructed in the most perfect manner, and of
the great number now In operation, not one has everreulred repairs. The constant and Increasing demand tor
them is sufliclent ovldence of their merlts, ,
They ure constructed so asjo apply steam directly into
the pulp, or with steam bottoms, aa desired.
This Amalgamator Operates aa Followa:
The pan being fillod, the motion of the muller forces the
pulp to the center, where itls drawn down through the aperture and between the grinding surfaces. Thence It is
thrown to the periphery into the quicksllver. The curved
plates again draw it to the center, where it passes down,
and to the clreumference as betore. Thusit Is constantly
assing in a regular flow between the grind. ng surlaces and
nto the quicksilver, nntil the ore is redueed to an impalpable pawder, and the metal amal amated.
i‘.
Setlers made on the same principle excel all others.—
They bring the pulp so constantly and perfectly in contact
with quic SISO that the particles are rapidly aud com
ly absorbed.

The Early History of the New Alma.
den Quicksilver Mines,
The following early account of the New
Almaden quicksilver mine, condcnsed from
an article in Silliman’s Journal for Septem:
ber, 1848, may not he uninteresting at thi
time:
The mine of New Almaden is situated a
few miles from the coast, about midway
between San Francisco and Monterey, and
in one of the ridges of Sierra Azul Mountain, The mouth of the mine is a few yards
down from the summit of the highest hil
that has yet been found to contain quicksilver, and is about 1,200 feet ahove the
neighboring plain, and not much more
above the ocean.
This mine, known to the aborigines from
time immemorial as a ‘‘ cave of red earth,”
from which they ohtained paint for thei
bodies, was first discovered to contain quick
silver ahout four years since, during ex
periments made by some Mexicans to smelt
the orefor the purpose of obtaining gold,
which they supposed it to contain. Ahout
two years ago it fell into the hands of Barron, Forhes & Co., who sent on hands,
tools and funds to commence working it,
Untortunately the vessel fell intu the hands”
of the United States forccs, and was confiseated; the operations of the mime were of
course delayed till the arrival of Mr. Forbes
himself a few months since, with miners,
tools, and whatever things he was ‘ahle to
procure in Mexico, to enahle him to make
a fair experiment ou the capahilities of the
mine. The great trouble was to obtai
suitable apparatus for extracting the ore,
At length jour potash ketiles were found,
which were set iu a furnace of adobes, with
condensers of mason-work immediately adjacent—a wretched apparatus indeed for
managing so subtle a thing as mercurial
vapor. The mode of working was to fill
each of these pots in the morning with 400
pounds of the ores of average quality,
hroken in lumps of the size of apples, put
on the covers and due them with clay. The
fires were then kept up till near night, when
the furnaces were allowed to cool gradnall
The next morning the condensers wer
opened, and the metal dipped up; which
usually amounted to from 200 to 300 pounds
for the four pots. This was a much less
percentage than the assay iudicated, and it
was ohvious that a large portion of metal
was lost. The upper parts of the pots and
condensers were found to he generally
coated with a crustof sulphuret of mercury.
Mr. Forhes wished to devise some way of
extracting the metal without mixing lime
with the ore in the roasting, hut was nn-—
successful, At lengtha kiln of lime, which
occurs in theimmediate vicinity, was hurned, ©
and mingled with this, the ores yieldinga ©
vastly larger percentage of metal. In the
last three weeks ahout 10,000 pounds of
metal have been extracted with the same
apparatus, heing a yield of over 50 per cent.
Whether the ores were picked or not the
writer cannot say, but presume they were,
Between 15,000 and 20,000 pounds have
been extracted in about two months, only
six miners having been employed in digging the ore, and the hands of the establishment, all told, miners, furnace-men, wood
choppers, ete., etc., numbering onlya score,
The mine is probably yiclding a net profit
of $100,000 a year with its present cruds
apparatus. Withsuitable furnaces and iron
cylinders or retorts, the mine would easily
yield $1,000,000 and upwards. Mr. Forbes
sails to Europe shortly for the apparatus
necsssary. The bed has as yet been followed but a few hundred feet, but the ores
grow more and more rich and abundant.
The other mines opened in the vicinity
have not yet heen sufficiently developed to
decide upon their character. Ore has hesn
found in fifteen or twenty other places
within a few miles around, and within a
few days in hills that do not seem to belong
to the same range with that which contains
the mine already descrihed.
Some ores of silver have also been recently discovered in this region ; but I hays
had no opportunity of procuring any gennine specimens as yet, and whether silver
mines worth the working will be fonnd 18
at least problematical. There are traces of coalin the country,
but nothing of value has yet heen discovered.
Gold has heen found recently on the
Sacramento, near Sutter’s Fort. It occurs
in small masses iu the sands of a new millyace, and is said to promise well.
