124 The Mining and Scientific Press.
An Ingenious Invention.
Amony the many useful articles exhibited
at the Fair, there are not many that exhibit
more practical ingenuity than the model of
the double inclined plane, for hoisting rock,
dirt, etc., from mines or excavations. The
beauty of the thing is its simplicity. The
contrivance consists of an ordinary dumping car, such as are in almost universal use
in the mines, the hind wheels of which are
six inches further apart than the fore ones.
The fore pairrun ona tramway eighteen
inches lower than that on which the
hind ones work. By this simple arrangement the cars always go up or
down on a level, thus avoiding the danger of anything falling out of them.
When the car reaches the platform, which
is set at a slight incline towards the dump,
the hind wheels run up an incline as the
lower ones run down, till the load upsets
itself by gravitation, when the weight of
the empty car being on the hind wheels,
draws it down the incline to the platform.
The inventor, who is a working miner,
may have never read a line of Euclid in his
life; yet he has applied a purely scientifio
principle to a thoroughly practical purpose.
This ingenious and practical device was
patented through the Mining anp ScrIEntrrio Press Patent Agency, by J. W.
Pierce, of Suisun, Solano county.
