The Mining and Scientific Press. 137 {From the Mechanica’ Fair Daily Press.) Stretch’s Map of the Workings on the Comstock Lode. A finely exccuted lithographic map, drawn by R. H. Stretch, M. E., late Stato Mineralogist of Nevada, showing the workings in tho Gould & Curry, Savage, Halo & Noreross, Chollar-Potosi and Bullion mines on the Comstock lodo, 2x5 feet in dimension, has been published by Britton & Rey, which is the most valnable contribntion of tho kind that has yet appeared on the coast, illustrating the status of extensive under-! ground operations. Such maps are exceedingly valnablo to stockholders and to all interested in the mines ropreseuted, as they . convey a better idea of tlte actual condition ; of things than could be obtained by erawling through the levels and shafts; and they aro absolutely necessary forthe engineering ealenlations constantly reqnired from and made by intelligent superintendents. The works are shown from the beginning np to July, 1868; and thomap was compiled from actual surveys made by Messrs. Stretch, James & Mason, so thatit may bo depended upon as reliable. The depth of each level is noted as regards its own shaft, and with reference to a common datum point for convenionco ofcomparigon. Red, green, blne, violet, yellow and brown colors are made nse of to indicate levels of different depth to the eye, ata glance. The map is divided up by fine lines into squares of 100 feet each, affording a convenient scale for the determination of borizontal distances underground. In appearance it is handsome and workmaulike, but plain and nnornamental. lt may be had at Gensoul’s, in this city, or at Lillie’s, in Virginia City. Having been lithographed on good pap:t, any additional workings can be drawn upon it as they are done, without detriment to tbe general appearance. A similar map on a larger scale, of the’ Chollar-Potosi mine, also by Mr. Stretch, may be seen on the walls of the front gallery at the Fair. It is more ornamental, and mnch larger; and is enhanced in value by the addition of front and side elevations, —which were omitted in the preseut map probahly for the purpose of avoiding an inconvenient inerense of size that would have been necessary. The Potosi, Chollar, Bajazette, and new shafts, are all shown, and the timbering is indicated by square subdivisions. Important Railroad Invention. The great objection to American railroads and railroad engineering, which one constantly bears talked about abroad and discussed with shuddering, is tbe frequency amongst us of dreadful railroad cidents; and it cannot be denied tbat tbe American railroad traveler on many of our Yoads takes his life in his bands, aud commits it té the gods whether his body shall be angled and torn, or whether be shall comaoff witb the loss of a limb, or whole and rejoicing at bie journey’s end. A little invention by Dr. Beers, is on exhibition at the telegraph stand to tbe right of the fountain, which seems to be of particular merit in this respect, and which, if practicahle, will prove the Americans to be equal to the emergency; as it promises to seoure perfect safety of travel on tbe bad roads, which are admitted tobe excusable only on the plea of long distances through new and unsettled countries. At dangerous places on the road, Dr. Beers proposes laying a middle rail, similar to the ordi. nary T rail, which is caugbt, under the flanges forming tbe top of the T, by two horizontal friction wheels, one on each side, fastened to tbe bottom of tbe ear, and whicb run along witbout necessarily touching, except when the car springs up; making it tbus an utter impossibility for any car to run off the track. The device is so simple, inexpensive and apparently practical, that it would seem probable of being bronght into practical use on such stretcbes as the Oakland piles, or on exposed eurves in tbe Sierra. The endings are pointed so that the car would take its hold on the safety-rail, and cling to motber earth at daugerous places, witbout requiring to be looked toin any manner by the engineer of tbe train. We are informed by Dr. Beers tbat no similar device for the accomplishment of the same purpose, has ever been proposed, or patented before. A middle rail has been used, bowever, on the Mount Cenis Railroad for the purpose of elimbing, the horizontal wheels being, in that case, set in motion by the engine and caused to serve as climbers by virtue of friction. A Mammoth Carriage Manufactory. Geo. P. Kimball & Co's carriage manufactory, occupying an entire 100-vara lot ort the corner of Fourth and Bryant strects, in this city, is believed to be the largest building on tbo Pacific Coast. In orderto form a faint conception of its dimensions, we would state for tho benefit of the reader, that it has a total of floor-room (not inelnding 225 feet square in the yard) of 86,000 square fect, or 19,000 more than the Mechanics’ Pavilion. The lot on which the building stands is valued at about $100,000, and the wholo eostof buildings and machinery amounts to about $150,000. In mentioning these works, tho Daily Alfa says: This structure was commenced in March only, and although the rain, scarcity of material, and delays of various kinds absorbed twenty days of tbe period between its commencement and its completion, less than three montbs bave sufficed to erect a structure that does honor to our State, and exhibits a confidence iu its future that cannot but result most favorably in a pecuniary point of view. Of late, California manufactured wagons bave been much more popular than the imported, as they are better adapted to the requirements of the country, and tbe business bas inereased in proportion to the growing wants of an increasing community. Messrs. Kimball & Co. are widely known tbroughout tbe State, and tbeir wagons are like bousehold words. About one year since tbey conceived the idea of a combination of tbe principle of the percb-spring and tborougb-brace—tbe perch and spring being one piece, and steamed and bent, forming a enrve, over which the tboroughbrace passes, and upon which tbe body of the wagou rests, an illustration of which is herewitb given. They also substitute a steel plate for tbe usual heavy axle, thus lessening the weight of an ordinary wagon 83 per cent. The experiment has proved a great success, and Messrs. K. &Co. having received their letters patent for these improvements, determined to increase their facilities for manufacturing equal to tbe demand; for this purposetbey bave erected a manufactory unequaled on this coast, and perhaps not excelledin tbe United States.” Having already mentioned tbe fine display of this firm in the Pavilion, we jwill add, in conclusion, that they are employing about 200 men in their business, and are turning out per montb, in addition to other work, 100 C spring thorough-brace buggies, and have orders for four montbs ahead. — a ee _ “Tp men or womin could but find the fabled fountain which is satd to restore health, and strength, and beauty, with what eagerncss they would rush to to drink its waters.” It is found in the S. T.—1860—X. The sale of the Plantation Bitters is without a precedent in the history of the world. They are at once the most speedy, strengthening health-restorer ever discovered. It requires but a single trial to understand this. : CerepraTep Buackine.—More songs bave been composed and sung upon the virtues of boot-blacking and excclsior soaps than on most any other theme, save that of love and romance; but they seem, after all, to have portrayed all the virtues that belong to Anstin’s celebrated California manu factured oil paste polish, which appear to possess a freshness and ease of polish which the other brands seem to have lost by transportation. J. Bray, at 416 Battery street, is agent for this and all other kinds of valuable blacking that is offered to the trade.
