Svecestrve Tacts.—In Ross Browne's
report for 1867, tho gold production of California is estimated at £25,000,000—less than
a fourth of which is credited to placcr mining. The wlicat crop of 1868 is roughly
estimated at 25,000,000 of bushels, which
at an average of $1.67 por hundred, would
give $25,000,000—as much as the whole
gold production of the preceeding year.
Twelvo years rz0 our gold mines yielded
rbout $40,000,000 year; the whent lands
hardly rnything. The mines are still deelining, but the incrcase in wlieat production is greater than the decline in gold.
The mines and whoat fields together now
yield $50,000,000 and over. There are not
over 2,500,000 neres of land now under eultivation of all kinds, in the State; yet the
total amonnt of Irnd susceptible of cultivation is not less than 50,000,000 of neres !
When the State shall havo rcaelied its greatest capability in agricultural industry, our
wheat erop will probably aggregate 200,000,000 of bushels, worth in averago years
four times as much as the highest figures
ever produeed in any year from the gold
mincs. The most encouraging featnre in
the chango of industry from mining to agrieulture is, that what we realize from the
latter nearly all remains in the State and
goes toward the improvement of farms and
the building up of cities, towns and manufaetures, while the produets of the mincs
were nearly all absorbed by foreign markets
to make up the balance of trade against us.
