cr
proprietor. These are some of tite points
in which there are serions variations. It
may safely be said that n farmer owning a
linndred acres of rich soit on a prairie
within twenty miles of any large town of
Illinois, is certaiu of being able to mako a
very comfortablo living ; but a miner with
a vein of anriferons quartz yielding ten dollars to the ton, within ten miles of a Californin town, is not certain of anything until
he has examined the vein, its position, its
size, the character of tho yeinstone and accompanying minerals, and tho proximity
and qnantity of wood, besides n number of
other particalurs.
Tirese are some of the diversitics of circomstances which beset qnartz mining in
different places, and render it impossible to
give n statement of the expenses of taking
ont rock, bnilding a mill and redneing the
ore, applicnble to the majority of tho mines,
It is nseless to uttempt to convey any precise idca about matters in which the variatious are so great between tho workings of
different mines, and between the workings
of the Bame mine at different times, All
that can be dono is to collect the facts in regard to the operations of the mines apd
mills of which we have reports, so as to
Bhow the range.—Jvoss Browne's Iirst Repart
Srvavtan Fact.—For mining purposes,
Bays the simerican Artisan, gunpowder is
now yery commonly exploded by means of
a wire rendered incandescent by clectricity,
Itappears, however, that certain conditions
are required to insure success. In vacno
the incandescent wire merely evaporates
the sniphnr, but the presence of air in
ever so small a qnantity, of nitrogen, or
perhaps of any gas, prevents this, and thus
renders the explosion certain. The evaporation of the sniphur is snpposed by some
to carry off the heat which wonld be required for the ignition of the other ingredients.
