The Mining and Scientific Press. 235
PurLosopay ix THE Foot Hiius.—The
following ideas, from a miner in a quiet
and sunny ravine in El Dorado County,
who, we are ready to vouch, is an honest
man, 2s well asa philosopher and a poet,
will be found eminently just, and suggestive:
After inveighing against tho bad policy
of mitiers running in debt and then lying
idle with the expectatiou of selling out
“fora big thing,” he continucs: Now is
the time to look to your interest in all kinds
of business; now is the time to stop talking
about negros and mongrels, or Chinpmen
bein pntin oftico; if you will Just take notice of some of our fellowmen and sce how
degraded they are, no wonder the people in
California is Coming allarmed on account
of the blrck race. Why, half tho population of allthe mining towns that I have
lived in are saloon-keepersand Idle harpers
on politics, and gamblers with their hie
heels boots, stuck up on some post as high
allmost as he stands, ond with aJgood havana
atthe expense of some working man, some
good man swindled cut of his caruings. In
ivy opinion these towns have got to be
sifted of so much Idleness. I do not approve of onc man doing moore thanhe is
able; any man that is aman, can work eight
honrs. Many a poor Califoruian, broken
down in health and bad Inck, now at this
day Inys in some lone cabin, paralyzed, in
the depbtlt of sorrow, old age coming on,
and they seem to think they aro as young
as ever, Only think, all yon that came
here in forty-nine, twenty years aded to
thirty, and have not laid np $50 a year.
Why Mr. Evrrors its Enough to paralyze
any industrions man to walk along these
old deserted streams that has been so rich,
and see men look so poor and degraded, in
some old smoky cabin, and cobwebs andold
burbon whisky bottles; now and then
medicines for rnmatism or paralyzed invalides; aud these beautiful streams, —healthy
tront streams,—oh just look you hoo have
Leen here since forty-nine. No wonder my
nabors often sny I’m in meelancholy love.
Whit are the company now of these mon ?
nothing but long tail, sultry looking Chinamen, or the buffalow head iudians, with as
much hare on his head as a black Canadian
pony’s mane or tail, and these flat Chinaman’s voices which sounds like tame geese
eating corn Early of a cold and frosty morn,
with now and then rx squeaking blue Jay
which breaks the mealancholy reveri of
all the day.
Tue Fare ov Japanese Traverers.—
Ritter enmity is still mauifested towards all
Japanese who have traveled abroad, by their
eountrymen at home. Kisabro, who visited
the United States with Mr. Van Reed, a
few years since, is said to be only saved
from immolation by wearing the American
uniform, as he is entitled to do as an attachéof the American Embassy. Even the
titled nobles who came out here as Commissioners to purchase war vessels, and returned home with the ram ‘‘ Stonewall,”
fared no better; in fact they were worse off
than the others, as they, being ‘‘ Tycoon’s
men,” labur under an additional disadvantage, especially in the south of Japan. Since
their return to Yokohama, they have been
keeping close under American protection,
Satsuma, the present commander in that
quarter, being determined, it is said, to
make them each a head shorter if he can
get his hands outhem. Finding their condition worse than that of Stote prisoners
condemed to the galleys, and that there was
uo hope of a speedy return of poace to
their country, they fiually determined tc
return to America aud remain for a time,
atleast, in a land of freedom and personal
safety. They accordingly returned by the
Great Repnblic, and are now stopping in
San Francisco.
Mr. Winans, the American coutractor of
the Petersburg Moscow Railway, is doing
some service to legal science. He has had
the whole “ Corpus Juris” of Russin, (the
“Swod Sakonow”) translated into English, having employed thirty-eight men in
his office for more thau x month; his object
being to sustain his contract with the Russian Government. The translation is to be
published iu London.
