The Mining and Scientific Press. 251 ANNEXATION Frenne . is Srvanroa.—aA Mazatlan correspondent of the Bulletin writes: Although the accession of Sonora, SinaJoa, ete., to the United States has been looked npon as a settled affair, your New York telegratu announcing the sale of these States, took both natives and foreigners hy surprise. The news soon spread over the city with almost clectric speed, ercating consideralie sensation amongst the Government cmployés, whose name is legion; but relief soon arrived by a copy of Mr. Godoy’ s letter to the Bulletin, appearing in the governuicut periodical, denouncing the rumor. Thero are 2 number of foreign merchants solely intercsted iu the european trade and monopolizing the bulk of commerce, who natnrally feel an aversion to a change that would open the market to compctitors of less capital. Whereas under the present regime, with full cargoes direct from Enrope, with the probabilities of an occasional revolution on the arrival of a vessel, when the merchant has the dictating of what duties he will or will not pay, are advantages not attainable under tho regnlated system of the American Governmert. In former years it was customary, upon the arrival of threc or four Enropean vessels, to pay some ex-official $10,000 or $15,000 to start ‘an imaginary pronunciamicnto, with a raid upon the city. And as the State Treasury was never guilty of holding surplus fnnds, the immediate necessity of means for the suppression of tho rebellion would bring the Government to almost any terms the merehants proposed, so that the needful was forthcoming. The vessels in the meantime lying on and off the port until such arrangements were satisfactorily completed. Among the native popniation, the more intelligent class, allowing due credit for their patriotism, anxiously await the day that these States will hold an equal advantage with California. Mcchanies and laborers, in the desperation of hope deferred, look forward in reliance to the future change that will give an impetus to labor and protection to industry, when there will be a time to sow and a time to reap, and when the everlasting tremor of revolutions shall lave died away. There is nevertheless a large number who live and have their being by the overthrow of law and order, born and inured toa life of libertinism and plunder, aspiring only to a fleet horse and brace of pistols, who detest thename of foreigner, knowiug their avocation would be gone . under a stable goverument, but who eloak their aversion under the garb of patriotism, . O’Brien, builder, will be finished in two weeks at, a cost of $1,200. ‘Taylor & Jackson’s new store is finished and ready for occupaucy, and a store will be opened in a few days by the owuers. This building is 25x40 feet, aud cost about $800. Vallejo Recorder. Tue Smozy ATMOSPHERE experienced a few wecks ago was extended over an immense space. Our Austin, Nevada, exchanges spoke of it. By steamer arrivals, we learn that the fog and smoke in Victoria, V. L., were so thick ou Sept. 26th, that busincss was almost entirely suspended. The Hawaiian Gazette of Sept. 16th, says: The atmosphere last Saturday morning was very smoky. Since then the heavens have been clouded, and the wind variable, with occasional light shnwers. The autumnal equinox is at hand, when uusettled weather may be expected. SaNnsEVAIN will this year make, at his Cocomongo ranch in San Bernardino county, 60,000 gallons nf wine.
