A coal mine has been worked at Chilliat,
Alaska, to the extent of taking out sixty
tons of coal, It is said -r silver lode has
been struck on Wrangel Island,
Oax~anp Corron Mrius.—Work hag
been resumed at the Oakland cotton mills,
The earthquake cracked the chimney and
threw down part of the walls. 7
Corron or wooleu covered with oil which
oxidizes rapidly when distributed thinly
over a gieat exteut of surface, has often
been the source of disastrous conflagrations.
Several flowing oil wells have been struck
one league from the coast, in the State o:
Oaxaca, near Port Angel, Mexico, This
strike has created quite on excitement in
that part of the country. .

npon the whole land of over four dollarsan
acre to meet the cust of reclamation, Two
huudred Chinamen are at work, forming a

Coan Mininc py Macminery.—At a recent meeting of the Institution of Mechani
cal Engineers, Leeds, a paper was read by
John Fernie in which the objects to be
gained hy the application of machinery to
coal cutting were stated to be: Ist, the
cheapening of the work; 2d, the saving of a
large quantity of coal, which, in the ordinary process of hoisting or undergoing hy
hand lahor with the pick, is broken up inte
slack and dust; 3d, the removal of the danger attendant upon undergoing by hand
labor; 4th, the getting a larger quantity of
coal out of the pit; 5th, in the case of machines worked hy compressed air, the collatcral advantage of better ventilation and
a cooler atmosphere in the mine, owing ti
the discharge of compressed air after each
stroke of the tool The machine traverses —
along the working face of the coal, and cuts
out a horizontal slot or groove along the
hottom of the seam of coal, or along a parting in the thickness of the seam itself. The
work is at the rate of 8 yards to 12 yards
per hour, including all stoppages, and undergoing the coal to the average depth of
about 3 feet 4 inches in from the face. The
work by each collicr by manual Irhor is
ahout 6 yards per day of 8 hours, undergoing to a depth of 3 feet in from the face,
The machine, therefore, performs, the work _
of from 12 to 18 men. .
At Pittsburg, Pa., there is in operation a
machine of this kind,{which goes either hy
steam or man power.
To PRESERVE SHINGLESAND FENCE Posts.
In a paper recently read before the Farmers’ Club of the American Institute, J. B.
Lyman says: ‘‘ In using many kinds of
wood, and especially chestnut and sappy
pine, for shingles, pickets, trellises, ete.,
much durability will be gained by boiling
in lime-water, or a weak solution of carbonate of soda. ‘The boiling coagulates the
most perishable parts, and the alkali corrects the acid of the sap, and prevents the
growth of fungus. Whitewash is to be recommeuded as a yaluahle preservative of
wood for a ‘similar reason. Fence posts
should be well seasoned and then treated
by hoiling the end to be set in the ground
in tar or resin. Tor a foot each way from
the snrface of the earth, when set, fence
posts should be well coated with a paint
that will exclude water. Setting posts top
end down does increase their durrbility.
Painting green wood is worse than useless.
It promotes decay by shutting out the air
which would stiffen the albumen beneath
the surface.”
Dynasure.—The Prnssiau Government
have just concluded an extensive series of
experiments with dyuamite, and next month
the French Governmeut will follow suit. .
The verdict given by the Prussian Military
Commission regarding dynamite is, that 16
is at least equal in power to ten times its

safest blasting agent known.
