Pe Mining and Scientific Press. 25 ~ Impry svements at the South End. There scems to be considerable activity at the present time along the water front near the foot of Third street. This locality can no longer be called ‘‘South Beach;” it may be temporarily kuown asthe ‘'Sonth End,” nntil the growth of the city shall pluceit so near the center of business that we shall have to go still farther southward to find the Sonth End. The ‘Beach” that, until within two or three years, has extended from near the marine hospital for nearly o mile around Rineon Point to Mission Bay, las now entirely disappeared, and not a vestige of it remains; its name has even disappeared from the strect cars which were formerly known as the North aad South Beach Cars. This entire beach is now covered with extensive wharves, piers, docks, warehouses, nannfacturing establishments, and an innumerable number of less portentious strnetnres. Such a wonderful transformation, in so short a period, is rarely met with in the growth of any city. New brauches of industry are constantly being started in this neighborhood, and enterprises already undertaken are largely iucrensiag their facilities for business. THE PACIFIC OIL WORKS are putting up an additional building, larger than their present structure, which, when completed, will give them about three times the space they now occupy. This, we understand, has become necessary to meet the increasing demands of business. ‘The new structure will be fitted up with machinery, which will be especially ocenpied in the mannfacture of castor oil. Thedemand for liasced oi] from this establishment calls for the constant occuputiou of their present inachinery. Itis pleasant to notice such evidences of prosperity in the inception of any of onr manufacturing enterprises, and especially in one so intimately connected with the agricultural iadustry of the State, NEW SAW AND PLANING MILLS. The increasing demand for such articles used in building as can be prepared by the aid of machinery or atasaw ond planing niill, is leadiag to the rapid multiplication of snch establishments in different parts of the city. In addition to thoso heretofore noticed in this journal, another has recently been erected on Brannan street, between Third and Fourth, 405120 feet on the ground, and three stories high. tion is now beiag built to this, having a 20foot frontand the same depth. Still another, and, if we are not mistaken, tho largest in the city, is now being erected near Long Bridge, and extending from Berry.to King streets. The buildings of this establishment cover an area of 200x 240 feet, and arc nearly ready for oceupation. Workmen are already engaged in seting up portions of the machinery. The works will be driven by a Hicks’ engine of 120-horse power, built at the Miners’ Fouudry. The principal structures are of wood; but the boilers and engine, which occupy tho central portion of the area, are placed in a fire-proof building, so arranged that they will hardly be able to communicate fire to the balance of tho works, or be liable to any serious injury should the surronnding works bedestroyed by the devouriag element. The boiler and engine will cost from thirty-five ‘to forty thousand dollars. The success of this enterprise is already fully casured by extensive advance orders for wiudows, sash, doors, ete., which canuot bo supplied at the establishments now in operation. Messrs. Metcalf & Bros. are the projectors and proprietors of these works, ’ THE SAMUELS WOOD PRESERVING COMPANY. These extensive works, which we have already noticed as in progress, are located near by, but just beyond the plaaing mills. They occupy a lot outside of the Long Bridge and fronting upon that structure, near its crossing of I’ourth street. This location gives them free access to an un-. obstructed water front, and abundance o room for handling any amount of material. Tho works were ‘already for starting yesterday. An addiImpressions by Heat and ‘Electricity. . Karsten obtained very distinct impressioas by the action of heat iu different . ways. He placed a medal upou a_ glass) plate, and submitted both toa gradually increasiag heat, in a common stove, for a few minutes, When tlte plate was cooled, it gencrally showed a distinct impression of the medal, on being breathed upon. A similar trial with smooth metallic plates did not yield similar results. He found that when a medal was moderately heated over a flame and then brought iu momentary . contact with a polished metallie plate, a beautiful impression appeared, which could be fixed by the fumes of iodine or mereury. The best impressioas were obtained when the medals were not burnished, or werc . slightly oxidized by contact with the atmosphere. In such cases good impressioas were at ouce visible, without tho application of fumes of any description. IMPRESSIONS PRONUCED BY ELECTRICITY. Electrieal figures, which have been termed by a German chemist, Dr. Riess, electrical hauchfigaren (figures produced by breathing) have been obtained upon metallie plates in the following manner: A coin is placed upon a metallic plate properly supported, but notinsulated. Sparks from au electrieal machine are caused to strike upon the coin. After 100 turns of an electrical machine with a 20-inch disk, the plate shows no impression until breathed upon, when a most perfect and beautiful impression of the coin, initsmost minute details, is distinetly seen, and beautifully variegated with iridiscent colors. Similar, but less distinctly defined impressions, are obtained by the uso of the galvanic battery, Wheu these phenomena were first observed, various speculations were indulged in with regard to the manner in which impressions were fixed, and to whatthey were due. The discovery having no practical value, we presume it has pretty much passen out of miad; at least we have never seen the phenomena accounted for. In reading over the account of these experiments, which were first made known by Karsten, some twelve years ago, in Poggendorff's Annals of Chemistry, it has occurred to us that the impressions are due to the transference of portions of the metallic substance of the coins to the glass, by the electric or galvanic currents, It is well known that a powerful galvanic entrent, such asis employed in the production of the electric light, iu passing over carbon points, carries with it minute portious of carbon. If a metallic plate is properly presented to the current, these particles of carbon (at least a portion of them) may bo collected ou the plate, in the form Rarmw Mam Coxscntoation.--Onr fellow citizen, Professor Rowlaadsou, being desirons of obtaining an early copy of the ninth volume of the transactions of the Royal Geologieal Society of Cornwall, which hus been: promised sorie time, re, ceutly wrote to the President of that body with the object of ascertaining when and where the same might beobtained. On the 6th instant he received a reply, dated June 10th, and bearing the Penzance post-mark of that date, aud the London one of the 11th, from which city it must have been transmitted to Liverpool. The distance from Peuzance to London is between 300 and 400 miles ; from London to Liverpool up, wards of 200,—or say a total of 600 miles of ; land carriage in Eagland,—from whence to jew York, something more than 2,000 miles . of ocean travel had to be traversed ; thence from New York to San I'rancisco 3,000 miles of land conveyance had to bo made,—the whole distance of 5,600 miles beiug accomplished, —inecluding stoppages at London, Liverpool and New York,—within tweatysix days, or atan average rate of about ten miles per hour for the entire distance, includiag stoppages. The reply of the Secretary of the Royal Cornwall Geologieal Socicty contains a paragraph to the effect that memoirs on the gold of Brazil, ou the silver of Chili, on the native copper of Lake Superior, and on the sulphur ores of Ireland, will speedily be published. This fact will probably interest some of our readers. Agents In Colorado. Cenrran City.--Messrs. Richards & Crane, of tho Cily Book Store, Main strect, wlil act as our agents. In the production of the impressions above alluded to, why may we not reasonably suppose that the flow of under surface of the coin, carried with it portions of the metal and fixed it firmly upon the plate upon which the coin rested in the same electricity, passing from any point of the manner as the carbon is kaown to be crrried over iu the case cited? The cxtremo thinuess of the coveriug film would naturally be brought out more distinctly by being “breathed upon,” or by being subjected to the developiag action of the fumes of iodine.
