__ The Mining: and Scientific Press. 315
The Last Half Century the Greatest.
The followiug is part of a racy article in
the Speetator :
“Few phenomena are more remarkable
than the degree in which—thoe progress of
mankind in those contrivances which promote the comfort of daily life—has been
voncentrated in the last halfcentnry. It is
not too much to say that in these respects
more has been done in onr own hfetime
than in all the previons lifetiine of the
race. Jt is in the matters of light, loeomotion, end ecommunieation that tho progress
efYected in this generation contrasts most
surprisingly with the aggregate of tho progress effected in all generations pnt together since the earliest dawn of anthentic
history. The lamps and torches which illaminated Belshazzar’s feast were probably
ns beillixnt, an framed ont of nearly the
inte materials, as those which shone npon
the splendid fetes of Versailles, when Matia Antoiurtte presided over them, or those
of the Tnileries during the Imperial magnificence of the First Napoleon. Pinc
wood, oil, and perhaps wax, hezhted the
banguct halls of the wealthiest nobles, alike
in the cighteenth century before Christ and
in the eighteenth century after Christ.
There was little differenee, except in finish
of workmanship and elegance of design,
hetween the lamps nsed in the days of the
Pyramids, the days of tho Coliseum, and
the days of Kensington Palece. Fifty years
ago, we burnt the same articles, and got
about tho same umonnt of lizht from them,
as we did five thousand years ago. Now,
we nsec gas, of which each burner is equal
to fifteen or twenty eandles; and when we
wish for moro ean have recourse to the
electric light or analagous inventions, which
are tifty fold moro brillant.
The same thing may be said of locomotion. Nimrod and Noah traveled just in
the same way, and just at the same rate, as
Thomas Assheton Smith and Mr. Coke of
Norfoll. The ehariots of the Olympic
Games went just as fast as the chariots that
conveyed our nobles to the Derby, “in our
het youth, when George the Third was
King.” When Abraham wanted to send a
tucssage to Lot, he dispatched a man on
horseback, who galloped twelve miles an
honr. When our fathers wanted to sond a
message to their nephews, they could do
no better. But the progress in the means
of communieation is the most remarkable
of all. In this respect, Mr. Pitt was no
better off than Pericles of Agamemnon. If
Ruth had wished to write to Naomi, or David to send a word of love to Jonathan
when be was a hundred milcs away, they
conld not possibly have done it under
twelve hours. Nor could we to ourfriends
thirty years ago. In 1868 the humblest
citizen of Great Britain cau send sneb a
message, uot a hundred miles, but a thousand, in twelve minutes.”
MsnuracTorissin Great Brrramn.—England ctill maintains her supremacy as an
exporting nation, yet there are indications
of a grert depression in several departments
ofindustry. In Germany and Belgium labor is cheap, machinery plentiful, and
capital has recently directed itself in an
eminent, degree to manufacture. Hence,
over 1867, there is a decided decrease in the
British exports of carpets, druggets, and
cloths, while ’67 shows a falling off from
the preceding year. Mcanwhile, the money
value of these exports decreased nearly six
millions of dollars in gold. Liven shows
an extensive falling off; so likewise, haberdashery, apparel, and machinery. The exporting beer trade indicates a loss of nearly
a million over last year. In coals, tin, copper, and iron there were large exportations
in both crude and mannfactured materials.
Nevertheless, the London Times remarks
thut what was gained in quantity was lost
in values; all classos of goods exhibiting a
depression in rates of sale. The loss of
England is, however, the gaiu of other nationalties, AJ] the populations along the
Baltic Sea are enriched from tho iucrease
of their mannfactories. In the United
States, despite the heavy internal tax, industrial pursuits indicato a steady increase.
Forty Mimes or Cars.—The Reuding
Railroad Company own 16,3855 cars of all
kinds, and 268 engines. Were theso cars
and engines all placed in line on their track,
commencing at Mt. Carbon, the opposite
end of the string wonld reach to Exeter
station, a distance of forty miles.—Penn,
