3395 ad A Suave Hovse—Eartiquake Proor. . Whilo the problem of earthquake-proof honses is receiviug attention, the description of a slate honse, built at Brownsville, Maine, by a N. Y, Eeening Postcorrespondent, is to the point : This house is not only shingled, but is clapboarded witb slate. Itisa slute edifice, firo-proof and indestructiblo, The slates are put on to tho boarding of the walls with only paper between. They are inthe form of seyments of a circle, overlapping cach other, and have a very ornamentul effect. The natural color of the alate is pleasing to the cye, and no paint is necded. If it were, the slate would furnish it, for when ground it uiakes an exccllent paiat, which Myr. Sparrow has nsed on bis ira with good effect. The whole establishment is elegant in appearance, and shows what can bo dono with native materials. The frout stcps areof beautiful slabs of slate; the wood-work is of brown ash, a Hative wood, whicb makes a handsome finish. Iron ms Canapa.—At Moisie River, iu the Province of (Qnebec, on the north shore of the St. Lawrence, acompany is working on a large scale alluvial deposits of magnetic iron sand. H. Beanmont Small, ina work recently published at Ottawa, Cauada, entitled ‘‘ Products and Manufactures of tho New Dominion,” says that thosand used by the Moisie Company yields fully sixty por cont. of malleable iron, and that tests made by the superintendent of the West Point Foundry show it to be of very superior quality.
