The Mining . and Scientific Press. 393 Cnaeap Mars.—Slowly, bnt surely, wo are advanciag in the devclopment of agencies by which the necessities of civilization are to be supplicd on this coast. Maps have been sadly needed. Counties, States aud ‘Territories which had to be visited were nnmapped, undescribed, and even unexplored; or maps so intcenrato as to be quite unreliable were to bo had only at high prices, Tho cra of cheap maps appears to be beginning. We have received from Bancroft & Co. a ftifty-cent map of Ceatral California, compiled by Wm. Henry Knight, embracing eleven counties, lyiag witltin a radius of cighty miles aronnd San Francisco—inelnding Stockton and Sacramento, a corner of Placor Connty, Watsonvillo and Cloverdale, as the limits— and showing all tlie railroads, stago routes, ete. . The size is 12x15 inclies, and the scale twolve miles to the inch. ee ee Prospecting with T3oom Dircues.—A great many valuablo lodes havo been dis. covered in Clear Creek County this sum! ner, by using what is called ‘* Boom . ditches.” A number of prospectors club together and dig long ditches along the monntain sido, which, when completed, are supplied with water from monutain streams, The water can be liberated at any desired point, when it washes the looso carth and rocks away—leaviag tho bedrock bare, and exposing the lodes to view. ars Increasen Durims on Forricn Coprrr. The bill to increase the dutios on foreign copper, which has passed the Honse of Representatives without mecting aay strong opposition, will, if it becomes a law, undonbtedly resuscitate many of the copper mining eaterprises in this State, which hayo becu lying dormant for two years. Bartaguantc-Proor Burunina. — Terra cotta and pottery ware chimney tops, Mansard or crib roofs, with slate or shingle covering, and wooden cornices, are recommended, and being adopted in this city, as practical measures ia the matter of earthquake-proof building. Tae Hovst Carrrntrrs’ Eight Hour Leagno gavo a Calico Party, being their second annual ‘‘ Hight Hour Ball,” at the Mechauics’ Pavilion, on Thursday evening. The attendance was good, notwithstanding the unfavorable state of the weathcr, and everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. Asrnonomican Crock.—The steamship Montana on her last trip brought out a fine astronomical clock, which is to be used by the U. S. Coast Survey on this coast. A site for an observatory is to be selected ia this city or vicinity. oe a A RECENT correspondent, writing in another than his mother tongue, gave a wrong uame to the proprietorship of the Jndkins & Kellogg mine, which error we highly deprecate. Its weekly edition is double the average of country papers, being without the range of large duilics, and having no competition at home. Its locul eolums afford many items for our city eotemporuries, while its rates of advertising are reasonably low. Ovi tte Pump Leather.
