Serine Batancrs.—The following is
from an exchange : The spring balance is
almost the only sort of apparatus that is of
more valuo to the owner the longer it is
used, This contrivance is so, for the reason that every strain en the tension of the
spring canses it to bend a little easier ; 80
that, if admitting it furnished a true index
of the weight of an articlo when it was new,
it will not do so after a few months,
Not only is the spring balanco inaccurate
whien compared with the lever balance, but
it is, aftera little use, inacenrate when compared with itself; that ia, it will requiro a
greater weight to register tho tenth pound
of the seale than it did the first; for the
reason that smaller quantities aro more frequently weighed than larger ones; or, again,
if ten pounds are weighed separately, they
will not weigh ten peunds when together.
Qorcx Tiau.—A train on the Chicago
aud Northwestern Railroad, on the 12th
ult., made the unprecedented ruu of ninety-one miles in ninety minutes. ‘Tho train
was ranning east, from Port Howard (Wis.)
to Chicago. The quickest prior mus of
which we have auy, recond, are as follows:
In England, 18 miles hy a special train in
15 minutes. In the United States, 14 miles
in 11 minutes, by an engine and six cars on
the N. Y. Central; 10 miles in 71; minutes,
on the Pennsylvania Railroad; 144 milesin
two hours 49 miuntes on the Hudson River
road; 8! miles in 90 minutes, from Indianapolis to Union City; 305 miles in 7 hours
32 minntes, from Albany to Niagara.—<Am.
