398 The Mining and Scientific Press. Machinery. VARNEY’ PATENT AMALGAMATOR These Machines Stand Unrivaled,. For rapidly pulverizing and. and amalgamating ores, they have noequal. Noetfort has been, or will be, spared to have them constructed in the most perfeet manner, and of the great number now in operation, not ous las everrewired repairs. Tho constant and increasing demand for them i is sufficient evidence of their merits. They are constructed so asto apply steam directiy into the pulp, or with steam bottoms, as desired. This Amalgamator Operates as Follows: The pan being filled, the motion of the muller forces the pulp to the center, where itis drawn down through the aperture and between the grinding surtaces. Thence it is thrown to the periphery Into the quicksilver, The curved Plates again draw it tothe center, where it passes down, . and to the circnmfcrence as before. Thusitis coustantiy assing iu a regular flow between the grinding surfaces and into the quicksilver, until the ore is reduced to an impalpable powder, and the metal amalgamated. Setlers made on the same prineiyle excel all others.— They bring the pulp so constantiy and perfeetly in coutact with quieksilver, that the particles are rapidly and com pletely absorbed, Mill men are invited to examine these themselves, at the PACIFIC lvl ans and setlers for N. . A mining engincer writes froma new district, not a thousand miles from White Pine, as follows: I am engaged here in building a small smeltingestablishment, which, according to the desire of the mine owncrs is to be hrought into operati#®n this winter, notwithstanding my hest attempts to persuade them of the better policy of deferring active operations till next summer, and meantime developing properly their mines. But it is an old story, which yet is always enacted anew—and whosoever he the present actors, it is their purses that suffer. Regarding White Pine, Ispent several days there four months ago. Little work had heen done at that time; and as my visit was not a professional one, I did not take much pains to investigate closely the geological and mineralogical circumstances. The following data, however, are reliahle, so far as relates to the ore deposits : : Treasure Hill, as well as the White Pine Mountains proper, trend due North and South. The limestone strata, constituting the body of the mountain masses, dip 20° to 25° towards the West. In consequence, . the eastern slopes of the mountains are very steep, and the western very gradual, as at Chloride Flat, The limestone is more or less metamorphic, (crystalline and dolo. mitic), showing stratification only in general aggregates. The northern point of Treasure Hill is formed of a strongly ferruginons quartzite, which I think occurs also in places on tho eastern side. This quartzite is, according tomy judgement, a metamorphic porphyry. In other districts similarly constituted geologically, (as at Reveille) where limestones and quartzites occur, I have traced it distinctly through several transitions, from the one in to the other. In the vicinity of the quartzite mass, (near Hidden ‘Treasure) the limestone passes into a thick bedded, yellow marl schist. In other districts I have ohseryed the same occurence, At the southern end of Treasure Hill—quite at its foot—there is ohservable a substratum of thin-foliated elay slate, underlying the limestone. The ore, I shouldsay, decidedly, does noz occur in veins, hut in irregular deposits, of which there are to be distinguished two kinds, viz., vertical and horizontal deposits. Hidden Treasure is a vertical deposit, or perhaps a ‘“‘stockwerk.” The Virginia, aceording to appearances at that time, was the same. “The Eherhardt and Keystone, at the southern cnd of Treastire Hill, are vertical deposits, heing horizontally of comparatively inconsiderable dimensions. Chloride Flat contains « number of horizontal deposits in a zone of the limestone near its surface, in which the general location of the ore runs with the stratification of the limestone. The Eberhardt and Keystone mines are situated at a far lower orelevel than Chloride Flat; so is the Virginia. Whether deeper ore-zones occur underneath Chloride Flat, is unknown. On the steep eastern flank of the mountain, nothing has heen found, thus far, I believe, which would justify that conclusiou; but on tho southern side there appear to he numerous branches, vide the locations helow the Eberhardt, On Chloride Flat the ore was found to extend to the surface at only a few places; in most cases it was found at a depth of from 5 and 6, to 20 feet, The average content of the ores, if we do not inelnde those of the Eberhardt and Keystone, is not great, by any means. Though rich nests have been found here and there, the general average cannot be estimated at more than $20 to $100 a ton. Advantages that may be mentioned in favor of White Pine asa mining district, are, Ist.—Its favorable local conditions. 2.—Great quantities of ore at a small depth. 8.—The character of the ores; being, in most of the mines, such as to admit of amalgamation withont roasting, withsplendid results. I have extracted 90 to 94 per cent. of the silver of the White Pine ores, as chloride. Accuracy oF SHooTmne.—The harrel and its rifling are intended to give direction to the bullet and to confine the power imparted hy the liheration of the gases, until this direction is assured. When these are assured the benefit of the barrel’s length ceases, In common use itis found that a barrel of 20 inches is as good as one of 82 inches in length. The ordinary Colt's pistol, navy size, barrel eight inches in length has been known, when well constructed, to project a ball accurately a distance of three hundred yarda. -
